Job summary

Advanced Measurement Technology (AMT), part of AMETEK’s Materials Analysis Division, is based in Oak Ridge, TN, and leads in high-precision measurement solutions for nuclear spectrometry and related fields.

The Mechanical Staff Engineer will design assemblies with machined parts, sheet metal, and plastics, create fabrication drawings, and build prototypes to drive new product development and manufacturing readiness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is required in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
• Minimum 6+ years of experience in mechanical design and fabrication.
• Experience with machined parts and sheet metal design.
• Knowledge of cryogenic and vacuum systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical assemblies using machined, sheet-metal, and injection-molded components with manufacturability in mind.
• Create detailed fabrication drawings using CAD; coordinate with suppliers and order prototype parts.
• Build prototypes and support product introduction to manufacturing.
• Participate in continuous improvement projects including documentation and budgeting.
• Collaborate with R&D to ensure compliance and smooth transitions.
• Assist procurement with obsolescence and supply chain challenges.
• Support documentation control with ECR/ECN processing.
• Identify AI use cases to improve productivity and cost efficiency.

Job description

The Mechanical Staff Engineer provides technical expertise in the design and fabrication of mechanical assemblies that support new product development. This role works cross-functionally with hardware, software, commercialization, R&D, and manufacturing teams to drive compliant, innovative, and manufacturable solutions that meet continuous improvement and production goals.

The Mechanical Staff Engineer will:

• Design mechanical assemblies using machined, sheet-metal, and injection-molded components, with consideration of fabrication methods, manufacturability, and production requirements.
• Create detailed fabrication drawings for parts and assemblies using CAD tools; communicate with suppliers on design specifications; order prototype parts.
• Build prototypes of newly designed systems and support product introduction to manufacturing through training, documentation and fixture design.
• Participate in continuous improvement projects, including assembly documentation, equipment specification, installation, and budget/time estimation.
• Collaborate with R&D engineers to ensure compliance and smooth product transitions.
• Support procurement with part obsolescence and supply chain challenges.
• Assist documentation control in processing engineering change requests (ECR/ECN).
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-marking, work quality, and to reduce costs.
• Must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.

The Mechanical Staff Engineer will have:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or similar (required).
• 6+ years of related experience in mechanical design and fabrication.
• Strong working knowledge of machined parts, sheet metal design and material selection.
• Knowledge of cryogenic and vacuum systems, including materials used in such applications a plus.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks suite of products.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools.
• Strong hands-on knowledge of 3D printing technology and materials.
• Good understanding of GD&T.
• Strong hands-on ability using hand tools for drilling, cutting, tapping, bending...etc.
• Understanding of electromechanical devices and their design and construction.
• Effective communicator with ability to work under tight deadlines and maintain project schedules.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to interpret technical instructions and manage abstract variables.
• Ability to collaborate across teams and support manufacturing goals.
