Job summary

FERGUSON, a leading Connecticut-based MEP contractor, is seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Estimator to deliver accurate, competitive HVAC sheet metal estimates and support pricing through construction, including change orders.

You will review plans, perform takeoffs, solicit vendor quotes, work with project teams, and identify value engineering opportunities while ensuring code compliance and project goals.

Qualifications

• Proven experience estimating commercial HVAC sheet metal construction projects similar to $1M–$20M.
• Strong ability to read drawings, specs, and addenda and develop comprehensive estimates.
• Experience pricing change orders and supplemental work during active construction.

Job description

Join a leading Connecticut-based MEP contractor specializing in public and commercial construction. Our projects include new construction, renovations, and complex occupied-facility work, with contract values ranging from $500,000 to over $30 million. We are seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive estimates for HVAC sheet metal systems while providing ongoing pricing support throughout construction, including change orders, scope revisions, and cost analysis.

Key Responsibilities

• Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, and addenda to determine project scope, identify risks, and develop comprehensive sheet metal estimates.
• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for HVAC ductwork, fittings, specialty sheet metal, insulation interfaces, supports, and related components using QuickPen AutoBid Mechanical Estimating software in a competitive hard bid environment.
• Solicit, evaluate, and level vendor quotations and subcontractor proposals to ensure complete, accurate, and competitive pricing.
• Coordinate with project managers, field personnel, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams to verify scope, resolve discrepancies, and maintain estimate accuracy.
• Prepare complete and timely bid proposals while maintaining estimating databases, historical pricing, and supporting documentation.
• Develop detailed pricing for change orders, RFIs, ASIs, CCDs, owner-requested changes, and unforeseen field conditions throughout the life of the project.
• Analyze drawing revisions and scope changes to determine labor, material, equipment, and schedule impacts for change order proposals.
• Support project management teams with supplemental estimates, budget updates, cost analysis, and pricing for ongoing project modifications.
• Identify value engineering opportunities that reduce project costs while maintaining project requirements, code compliance, and system performance.
• Participate in pre-bid meetings, scope reviews, project turnover meetings, and coordination with operations to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to execution.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, general contractors, architects, engineers, vendors, suppliers, and fabrication partners.
• Support continuous improvement of estimating procedures, historical cost databases, and best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

• Proven experience estimating commercial HVAC sheet metal construction projects ranging from $1 million to $20 million or more.
• Strong background in competitive hard bid estimating for public and commercial construction.
• Extensive experience preparing, negotiating, and pricing change orders, scope revisions, and supplemental work throughout active construction projects.
• Strong understanding of HVAC ductwork fabrication, installation methods, labor productivity, and material costs.
• Ability to read and interpret construction documents, including mechanical drawings, specifications, addenda, sketches, submittals, and contract documents.
• Experience evaluating drawing revisions and determining cost impacts associated with design changes and field conditions.
• Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple bids and change order requests under tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with estimating, project management, fabrication, and field operations.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Strong working knowledge of QuickPen AutoBid Mechanical Estimating software or comparable estimating platforms is preferred.
