Job summary

S&C Electric Company is seeking a Mechanical Quality Technologist in Chicago to inspect mechanical assemblies and subassemblies in a manufacturing setting. You will interpret drawings, perform testing, document results, and ensure adherence to quality standards.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of mechanical subassemblies and final assemblies to ensure quality.
  • Verify tolerance and assembly accuracy against drawings and BOMs.
  • Record inspection results and initiate corrective action for non-conforming products.
  • Calibrate and maintain mechanical testing equipment and tools.

  • 2nd Shift: 4:30 pm-1:00 am (Monday-Friday)

Compensation

At S&C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, and we are committed to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated annual base salary range for this position is $44,530-$55,660 + 10% shift premium. Individual pay within this salary range is determined by several compensable factors, including performance, knowledge, job-related skills and experience, and relevant education or training. This role is also eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.

Join Our Team as a Mechanical Quality Technologist

Are you passionate about Mechanical Quality? The Mechanical Quality Technologist is responsible for inspecting and testing mechanical assemblies, subassemblies, and parts within a manufacturing environment. This role ensures that mechanical components meet quality standards by conducting thorough inspections and tests according to established procedures. The role involves interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and test results, and documenting inspection results. The position requires strong attention to detail, a solid understanding of quality inspection methods, and the ability to operate mechanical testing equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections of mechanical subassemblies, final assemblies, and other mechanical fixtures to ensure compliance with product specifications and quality standards.
  • Verify that mechanical components are assembled correctly and that tolerances meet established criteria.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation to ensure compliance with design and production standards.
  • Record and document inspection results, identifying non-conforming products and initiating corrective action as required.
  • Utilize, maintain, and calibrate mechanical testing equipment testing equipment, ensuring it is in proper working condition.
  • Collaborate with production teams to address quality issues and suggest improvements to processes.
  • Assist in developing and improving testing procedures and protocols based on findings and feedback.
  • Understand and follow ISO 9001 standards and ensure compliance in daily work.
  • Maintain detailed inspection logs and reports for review by supervisors.
  • Assist in maintaining the safety of the work area by following relevant safety guidelines for handling mechanical components and equipment.
  • Continuously develop skills related to mechanical testing and inspection techniques, with a focus on pursuing relevant certifications (e.g., ASQ, ASME).
  • Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules.
  • Work with departmental mentors to gain and apply feedback in pursuit of improved work quality.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
What You’ll Need To Succeed
  • High school diploma.
  • 3+ years of hands-on manufacturing experience, such as assembly.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical systems. Able to complete troubleshooting tasks to identify issues within these systems.
  • Ability to understand part drawings, Bills of Material, Sales Orders, & Technical Documents.
  • Good understanding of ISO 9001.
  • Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment on a product floor and open to learning new concepts of mechanical/product testing.
  • Proficient in performing precise and delicate tasks using hands and fingers. Able to manipulate small objects, operate tools, and handle intricate equipment effectively.
  • Sound attention to detail, with the ability to follow detailed instructions and identify correct vs. incorrect product functions.
  • Rounded communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to articulate information efficiently and effectively to team members in a variety of production support departments.
  • Good computer skills with the ability to review and respond to requests and use Microsoft/ERP applications.
  • Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring equipment.
  • Good shop math skills with the ability to calculate measurements.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to understand and complete requests given by team members inside and outside of the department.
  • Ability and willingness to follow Health, Safety & Environment procedures accurately, reporting concerns promptly to the safety action team.
Preferred
  • Associate degree in a trade or related mechanical/electrical field.
  • ASQ Certification
  • Experience working in an inspection role in a manufacturing organization.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement manufacturing principles.
Physical Requirements
  • Sitting: Occassionally required to remain in a stationary position and perform desk-based
  • Walking: Frequently required to walk moderate distances
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequently required to use hand-eye coordination to control both hands and arms for a full range of motion to operate equipment/machinery/power tools/office productivity equipment
  • Ascending/Descending: Occassionally ascending or descending ladders/stairs/scaffolding/ramps/poles
  • Observation/Eyesight: Frequently required to observe details at close range including depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to differentiate between colors
  • Communication: Frequently required to talk and hear, in person and by phone/conference calls
  • Environmental & Hazardous Conditions
    • Frequently working indoors in an air-conditioned/non-air-conditioned office/manufacturing/site-based environment (Will be both in office and manufacturing environment.)
    • Infrequently exposure to fumes/vapors/dust/gases/odors/mist/toxic chemicals/radiation/vibration/grease/oils/radiation/lasers/other etc.
    • Occassionally exposed to low/moderate/high noise levels including machinery/vehicles/forklifts/office equipment/office traffic etc.
    • Infrequently working around energized equipment with the risk of electrocution/scalding/burns/other etc.
    • Infrequently exposed to wet humid/outdoor weather/extreme cold (non-weather)/extreme heat (non-weather) conditions/other etc.
    • Occassionally working with machinery with moving parts/vehicles/forklifts/heavy machinery/sharp objects/other etc.
