Job description

Job Title

Mechanical Project Engineer II

Overview

Are you looking to advance your engineering career and take ownership of meaningful project deliverables while continuing to develop your technical and leadership capabilities? At Vanderlande, we are seeking motivated engineers who are ready to build upon their engineering foundation and contribute to the successful execution of airport baggage handling system projects across North America.

As the global market leader for future-proof logistics process automation, Vanderlande supports baggage handling operations at more than 600 airports globally, including 12 of the top 20 airports, and provides automation solutions for leading parcel and warehousing customers.

We are looking for a Mechanical Project Engineer II to support the North American Engineering Airport Department. Vanderlande’s Airport Engineering Department is responsible for the design, specification, coordination, installation support, and commissioning of baggage handling systems throughout North America. The MPE II is expected to independently perform engineering tasks and manage assigned project deliverables while collaborating with Project Lead Engineers, discipline leads, and project stakeholders.

Success in this role requires strong technical fundamentals, attention to detail, effective communication skills, ownership of deliverables, and the ability to balance technical, schedule, cost, and customer requirements. The MPE II must be capable of solving routine engineering challenges independently while recognizing when escalation or collaboration is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Translate customer drawings, specifications, and project requirements into mechanical design deliverables.
  • Develop and modify 2D customer approval drawings, installation drawings, and supporting engineering documentation.
  • Create and maintain 3D models utilizing Autodesk and Vanderlande design tools.
  • Perform clash detection reviews and coordinate resolution efforts with other engineering disciplines.
  • Perform spatial analysis of maintenance access, clearance envelopes, egress pathways, installation constraints, and forklift aisles.
  • Perform system and component level calculations including throughput, motor power, belt pull, equipment loading, and structural reaction forces.
  • Engineer standard and moderately complex non-standard mechanical interfaces and project-specific applications.
  • Specify mechanical equipment including Vanderlande-manufactured and third-party purchased components.
  • Create and maintain equipment lists, conveyor lists, motor manifests, bills of materials, and engineering tracking documents.
  • Participate in internal design reviews, model reviews, and project coordination meetings.
  • Coordinate engineering deliverables with Electrical, Controls, Supply Chain, Installation, and Project Management teams.
  • Document engineering decisions through design reports, installation files, engineering instructions, and field support documentation.
  • Support site surveys, installation activities, commissioning efforts, and issue resolution.
  • Manage assigned project deliverables while maintaining schedule commitments and communicating status, risks, and required actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and development of engineering standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and new team members as assigned.
  • Follow Vanderlande safety, quality, and engineering standards throughout project execution.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of relevant engineering experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Experience in mechanical design, industrial systems, automation, material handling, manufacturing, construction, or related industries.
  • Ability to independently execute engineering assignments with limited supervision.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and familiarity with Autodesk design tools including Revit, Navisworks, ACC/BIM360, or similar platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliverables in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Ability to document engineering decisions and maintain project records.
  • Working knowledge of engineering calculations and design principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn and continuously improve technical and project execution skills.
  • Must be willing and able to travel domestically up to approximately up to 15%-20% as required for project support.
  • Must be willing and able to travel internationally during the initial onboarding and training period. International assignments may be required for up to three (3) months to support technical training, product familiarization, and integration into Vanderlande engineering processes.
  • Must be willing and able to travel internationally thereafter as required for project support, training, site surveys, installation support, and commissioning activities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Design experience within the material handling, airport, logistics, automation, or industrial equipment industries.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Familiarity with OSHA requirements, ergonomics, and applicable industry standards.
  • Experience with BIM coordination and model review processes.
  • Experience supporting installation, commissioning, or field engineering activities.
  • Knowledge of airport baggage handling systems.
  • Experience with project planning, deliverable tracking, and engineering change management.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvements and standardization.
