Atlas Copco Tools & Assembly Systems LLC in Auburn Hills, MI is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to lead engineering projects, drive mechanical design, and guide internal and external teams from kickoff to customer plant acceptance. The role focuses on automated assembly systems, fastening applications, and cost‑effective, manufacturable solutions.

You will manage schedules, budgets, and ensure compliance with customer requirements and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree (BSME) from an accredited four-year college with 5 years machine design or 10+ years experience.
• Proven leadership in a fast-paced environment.
• Must have project engineering experience.
• Proficient with SolidWorks.
• Experience with Nutrunner applications.
• Automation design with screw feeder integration is a plus.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong math and analytical abilities.
• Ability to define problems and analyze data.

Responsibilities

• Manage mechanical engineering schedules across the project lifecycle within budgets and customer requirements.
• Set objectives by reviewing proposals and requirements with engineering teams.
• Determine project specifications by evaluating customer products, environments, and technical requirements.
• Monitor and manage engineering budgets to meet approved cost targets.
• Coordinate external engineering resources by developing RFQs, reviewing quotations, and managing supplier costs.
• Review engineering designs to ensure compliance with customer specifications and company standards.
• Ensure mechanical designs reflect revisions, manufacturing changes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support equipment builds, system integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
• Evaluate mechanical designs for continuous improvement, risk reduction, and manufacturability improvements.

As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you will Lead engineering projects and mechanical design activities from kickoff through customer plant acceptance. Provide technical direction to internal engineering teams and external engineering partners supporting Atlas Copco solutions, including mechanical design, assembly support, and startup activities. Establish project priorities, utilize engineering resources, and collaborate with Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with customer requirements and quality standards.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in automated assembly systems—especially fastening applications—and the vision and ability to transform customer requirements into innovative, cost‑effective, and manufacturable solutions.

Here’s how you’ll make an impact:

• Manage mechanical engineering schedules throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring adherence to project schedules, budgets, and customer requirements.
• Develop project engineering objectives by reviewing project proposals and project requirements while collaborating with engineering teams as needed.
• Determines project specifications by evaluating customer products, operating environments, technical requirements, and applicable internal standards from similar projects.
• Monitors and manages engineering budgets to ensure projects are completed within approved cost targets.

• Support equipment builds, system integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities as required.
• Evaluate mechanical designs to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, risk reduction, manufacturability enhancements, and cost optimization while ensuring compliance with project requirements.
• Contribute to departmental goals and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance engineering effectiveness and customer satisfaction.

• Bachelor’s Degree (BSME) from an accredited four year college or university with 5 years Machine Design experience or 10+ years Machine Design experience.
• Proven leadership skills in a fast‑paced work environment.
• Must have project engineering experience.
• Proficient working knowledge of Solidworks.
• Fastening experience with Nutrunner applications.
• Working experience with Torque Tubes, Articulating Arms and Ergonomic Assists.
• Machine tool experience for general/final assembly for general industry (GI) and/or automotive industry (MVI).
• Automation design with screw feeder integration is a plus.
• Excellent oral, written, and organizational communication skills plus strong interpersonal skills are required
• Mathematical Skills to work with advanced mathematical concepts, and have a high level of analytical ability
• Reasoning Ability to technically define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
