Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting the Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent or Coordinator in the preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment associated with the water treatment and distribution system or wastewater treatment and collection system. Work is performed in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act or Clean Water Act and other State and Federal laws concerning water, water sampling, and water or wastewater treatment or wastewater collections. These guidelines are clear and specific. Work involves servicing, maintaining, and repairing water treatment and conveyance units, mechanical equipment, electrical circuits, and associated instrumentation. Work is assigned by the Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent and/or Mechanical Maintenance Coordinator, and is spot-checked for accuracy and the nature and propriety of

the final results. The incumbent provides 24-hour on-call emergency duty coverage.

Essential Functions

Works with staff, vendors, and contractors for proper maintenance of Jack Turner Dam, water plant mechanical facilities, electrical and electronic equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, chemical process controls, environmental lab, and related equipment in water supply, water or wastewater treatment and water distribution or wastewater collections divisions.

Performs preventive maintenance, scheduled maintenance, replaces parts, and makes necessary repairs on ozone generators, super pulsar clarifiers, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filters, liquidoxygen systems,booster pumps, sewage pumps, sump pumps, hydraulic pumps, splitter box mechanics, chemicalandlinefeedsystems, gear reducers, ventfanmotors,vacuumline,dehumidifiers,blowers, generators, and other water or wastewater related equipment.

Troubleshoots telemetry computers, and malfunctioning electrical, electronic, mechanic, and hydraulic systems; assists licensed electricians with high voltage electrical work.

Coordinates and participates in daily staff work with plant operations, electrical, instrumentation, and control maintenance groups for efficient maintenance/repairs at the water or wastewater plant, water tanks, pump stations, and remote sites throughout the county.

Works with other county personnel and contractors to coordinate new construction/installation/modification of water production facility, water storage tanks, pumpstations, andpressure monitoring stationsincludingattendingmeetings,submittingcoderegulations, andoverseeingandmonitoring mechanical aspects.

Mayserveasactingsupervisorinthesupervisor'sabsence.

Performstakedownandcleaningofwaterorwastewatertrainsystems.

Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Division {EPD) rules of safe drinkingwater, and wastewater treatment and conveyance.

KnowledgeofCountywaterorwastewater system.

Abilitytoperformworkduringintermittentperiodsofsitting,standing, andwalking.

Abilitytoclimbstairsandladders, reachoverequipmenttomakeadjustments, turnlargevalves,climb intoconfinedareas,liftobjects weighingover50 pounds, andusetoolsrequiringahighdegreeof dexterityinordertooperate/repairequipment andchangechemicalsystems.

Abilitytooperatepump controls,forklifts,compressors,and cranelifts.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Hazards associated with the operation of power tools and equipment, working around high voltage pumps, and with chlorination equipment are present. Appropriate safety equipment must be worn at all times.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of mechanical maintenance and repair experience. Experience must have provided knowledge of the operational and safety regulations pertaining to water treatment and conveyance systems or wastewater treatment and collections systems and general maintenance.
  • Current and valid State of Georgia driver's license.
  • Certified to use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) andsuppliedairsystemsforentering hazardous areas or must obtain these certifications within six (6) months of hire.
