Job Title: Mechanical Inspector

Location: Calumet Armature – Riverdale, Illinois

Job Summary:

Calumet Armature is seeking a detail-oriented and quality-focused Mechanical Inspector to inspect manufactured parts and components to ensure they meet engineering drawings, specifications, and established quality standards.

The Mechanical Inspector will use precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other inspection tools to verify dimensions, tolerances, fit, and overall workmanship. The ideal candidate will be comfortable reading mechanical drawings and blueprints and have strong attention to detail.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Inspect mechanical parts and components to ensure they match engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Use calipers, micrometers, gauges, tape measures, and other precision measuring instruments to verify part dimensions.
  • Measure inside and outside dimensions, lengths, widths, depths, diameters, and other required measurements.
  • Verify parts are manufactured within specified tolerances.
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Identify defective, damaged, or out-of-specification parts and clearly document findings.
  • Compare completed parts against drawings and inspection criteria.
  • Communicate quality issues and discrepancies to supervisors, production employees, and other appropriate personnel.
  • Assist production personnel in identifying and correcting dimensional or workmanship issues.
  • Complete inspection reports, quality records, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspection results and nonconforming material.
  • Verify that measuring and inspection equipment is properly maintained and used correctly.
  • Follow established quality procedures, work instructions, and safety requirements.
  • Assist with final inspections prior to shipment when required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe inspection area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary: USD $25.00/Hr. - USD $30.00/Hr.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in mechanical inspection, quality control, machining, fabrication, or manufacturing preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring tools.
  • Strong understanding of measurements, dimensions, tolerances, and basic mechanical concepts.
  • Basic mathematics skills, including fractions and decimals.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to identify differences between actual parts and drawing specifications.
  • Ability to document inspection results clearly and accurately.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a production/quality team.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience inspecting machined or fabricated metal parts.
  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Experience using precision measurement equipment.
  • Experience working in a machine shop or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to use inspection documentation and quality forms.
  • Experience identifying root causes of dimensional or quality issues is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to operate measurement and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and maneuver around manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move parts and materials as required.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment while following all required PPE and safety procedures.
Work Environment

The Mechanical Inspector will work in a manufacturing and machine-shop environment and may be exposed to operating machinery, noise, metal components, oils, coolants, and other industrial conditions. Proper personal protective equipment and safety procedures must be followed at all times.
