Barry-Wehmiller Companies Inc. is seeking a Field Service Technician – Mechanical to install, test and service envelope converting equipment at customer sites across the United States. You will work with engineers, perform startup, and train customers on operation and routine maintenance.
A strong mechanical background with gear trains, die-cutting and PLC-controlled lines is valued. Travel up to 50% and associate degree required; a B.S. is preferred.

The Field Service Technician – Mechanical position will perform mechanical field service work in a computer-based environment, assisting and troubleshooting with engineers, while working as a team, to test, install, start-up and demonstrate BW Converting envelope converting equipment – including die-cutting/blanking units, gumming and moistening stations, folding and seam-forming sections, and window-patching units – along with training customers on the operation and mechanical maintenance of this equipment. Field service technicians plan and perform a wide range of duties to install, demonstrate and instruct customer’s employees in the operation of company produced envelope converting machinery at the customer’s plant.
Work from assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, machine manuals, technical procedures and specifications to assist with or install new envelope converting machines – including blank feed sections, die-cutting/creasing stations, gumming and tacking units, folding and seam-forming sections, and window-patching units – and upgrade as required; responsible for installations of various sections and complete envelope lines and adjustments as necessary to ensure proper operation. Set up and operate envelope converting equipment to produce customer’s product (window, remittance, catalog and specialty envelopes); instruct operators in set-up and operating procedures; provide technical and practical answers to customer’s questions or problems. Perform routine and/or emergency breakdown mechanical service on company envelope converting equipment; determine root cause of trouble; prepare report of findings and solutions to problem. Assist installation coordinator with pre/post installation meetings and audits at customer facility and assessing manpower needs. Report quality issues and take corrective action to prevent reoccurrence. Act as liaison between customer and company; maintain positive relationships with customers. Prepare and submit reports as required. Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to less experienced personnel. Work in a team of field service team members, contractors and/or customer personnel through the project stages. Create and sustain a safety environment that promotes a safety mindset, embraces training and adherence to safety policies and procedures, and encourages awareness and correction of safety hazards. Ensure that work areas and equipment are maintained in clean and orderly condition and all safety regulations are observed; report and correct any unsafe work practices or conditions immediately. Perform other duties as assigned.
An Associate degree in Mechanical Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology or a related field is required. B.S. degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology is preferred. 18 years old at the time of hire to operate equipment KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
A strong mechanical skill set – including gear trains, cam and linkage systems, die/knife maintenance and sharpening, bearing and alignment work, and pneumatic systems – is required to complete a variety of work in this position. Knowledge of basic web handling and industrial experience, with focus in envelope converting – die-cutting/blanking, gumming/tacking, seam forming, flap folding, window patching, and count/stack/bundle systems – is a plus. Experience as an envelope machine adjuster, mechanic, or operator on die-cutting, folding, gumming, or seam-forming equipment is highly valued. Working knowledge of Giddings & Lewis, Rockwell, and Siemens PLC-controlled envelope lines is a plus, along with a background in machine process control and mechanical timing/registration on servo-driven equipment such as W+D (Winkler+Dünnebier)-style die-cutters, folder-gluers and seam formers. Ability to travel at least 50% of the time.
This position does not directly supervise other associates.

Walk, stand or otherwise move about continuously. Exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards which may require respiratory protection. Typically sits, grasps items and performs keyboarding for occasional operation of a computer. May travel by air or car frequently.
