Job description

Mechanical/Electrical Estimator I
Position Overview

As a Mechanical/Electrical Estimator I, you'll support the early phases of commercial HVAC, plumbing, mechanical systems, and controls projects by assisting senior estimators with quantity takeoffs, pricing, and risk/opportunity identification. Working under guidance, you'll help develop accurate conceptual and detailed estimates while learning industry best practices in a collaborative, people‑first environment. This role is ideal for detail‑oriented professionals eager to build a career in preconstruction and contribute to winning, profitable projects that deliver sustainable mechanical solutions nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of conceptual, rough‑order‑of‑magnitudes (ROM), and detailed cost estimates for HVAC, plumbing, piping, ductwork, electrical, and mechanical systems from narratives, schematics, design development, or full construction documents.
  • Review contract documents (plans, specifications, addenda, scopes of work) and perform quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment.
  • Gather and organize supplier/subcontractor pricing and data under supervision to support accurate budgeting and proposals.
  • Respond to RFP/RFQ requests.
  • Maintain accurate, organized project files, estimate records, and documentation.
  • Help identify design challenges, code gaps, constructability issues, and value engineering opportunities.
  • Participate in client and stakeholder meetings as needed to gather scope and provide basic estimating support.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (estimating, operations, sales) and external partners to align deliverables with project objectives.
  • Assist with special projects, research, or administrative tasks related to estimating as assigned.
  • Actively learn commercial construction methods, mechanical systems, estimating techniques, and Modigent standards through on‑the‑job training and mentorship.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Experience: 2+ years of relevant experience in commercial mechanical estimating, preconstruction, project coordination, or a related field.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office‑based with occasional site visits; ability to walk construction sites, lift light materials (plans, laptop), and travel regionally as needed; standard office mobility for computer work and meetings.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office with hybrid options and occasional active construction sites; exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, heights; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel‑toed boots) on sites—this is a safety‑sensitive position.
Required Skills
  • Understanding of commercial construction practices, mechanical systems (HVAC/electrical/plumbing/piping preferred), and reading blueprints/specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel essential for data organization and calculations; Word and Outlook for communication).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and eagerness to learn quickly.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with a professional demeanor.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work toward increasing independence.
  • Commitment to accuracy, quality, and continuous improvement in a fast‑paced preconstruction environment.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives and tool allowances where applicable.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus HSA options with employer contributions in select plans, and company‑paid basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
  • Paid time off, holiday pay, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan to support your long‑term financial well‑being.
  • Professional development through hands‑on training, mentorship, apprenticeships, certifications, and clear career advancement paths across our nationwide operating companies.
  • Inclusive, supportive culture that values diversity, dignity, respect, collaboration, integrity, and personal fulfillment—empowering you to build a rewarding, long‑term career.
