Job description

Overview Merrick is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a team of engineering and design personnel serving the Nuclear Services & Technology Business Unit in our project office in Aiken, SC. This dynamic multi-discipline engineering group specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remotely operated mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. Job Description The Mechanical Engineer II will serve independently and on a team of engineers and designers within the equipment design group and interface with other disciplines (electrical, I&C, structural, and process). This individual is a degreed engineer capable of executing design tasks. Tasks include the design of containment systems (gloveboxes, containment hoods), material handling systems, equipment integration and installation, and preparation of fabrication drawings, specifications, datasheets, acceptance test plans and calculations. Work in a design team environment, direct the work of junior engineers and designers, delegate work as required, and take design direction from senior-level engineers. Key Responsibilities Detailed design activities include preparation of fabrication drawing packages, equipment datasheets, fabrication specifications, procurement specifications, engineering studies, test plans, and detailed equipment sizing & qualification calculations. Independent planning and execution of mechanical engineering design tasks within schedule and budget commitments. Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures. Coordinate and communicate detailed phases of design work with other engineering disciplines. Provide shop support during fabrication and testing. Required Experience Degree Requirements: Bachelor of Sciences in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Accredited Program is required. Engineering Technology degree will not be considered. Minimum four (4) years of engineering experience required. Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship. Must have the ability to acquire a security clearance. Demonstrated capability in the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, engineering analyses, strength of materials calculations, fabrication and procurement specifications and basic knowledge in the selection of materials. Familiarity with 3D design software Creo (ProEngineer), SolidWorks, or Revit. Familiarity with Mathcad. Candidate will be expected to have their FE / E.I.T. Certification. Previous experience with NRC, DOE, or DoD projects desired. Familiarity with NQA-1-2000 quality assurance programs desired. Experience with supplier support, factory testing, and field startup desired. Local candidates preferred. Physical Requirements Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation. Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
