Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join the Product Support and Development - Mechanical team within the Manufacturing Division. This role focuses on hands-on design, problem solving, and collaboration with customers to deliver robust mechanical solutions for our facilities.

You'll work with CAD tools, including SolidWorks, to develop and iterate designs, support production staff on the shop floor, and participate in design reviews.

Qualifications

• 2-year+ technical degree or equivalent combination of training and work experience.
• Competence with applied physics, geometry, algebra, and basic trigonometry is required.
• CAD experience is required.
• 2+ years of experience in three or more areas such as mechanical design and analysis, materials and processes, mechanics, manufacturing engineering, or electronic manufacturing techniques.

Responsibilities

Job description

SEL is looking for a people-oriented Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our Product Support and Development - Mechanical team in our Manufacturing Division. Our team develops and integrates mechanical solutions for our manufacturing facilities that enable us to build our products in a safer, more reliable, or more economical way. (Swing shift: 3pm-11:30pm)

A typical day as a Mechanical Engineering Technician might include:

• A mix of hands‑on design work, problem‑solving, and working directly with your customers.
• Collaborating on everything from problem statement creation to solution integration and closing out theprojects.
• Primarily assisting in the development of mechanical solutions that make our production environment safer, more reliable, and more economical.
• Using mechanical assemblies, occasional basic pneumatics and electronics, SolidWorks analysis methods, and various materials and manufacturing methods to turn concepts into engineered realities.
• CAD work - whether you’re building new designs or tweaking existing ones. Our solutions will be brought to life on the production floor so making sure they actually work in the real world is huge.
• Being involved in design reviews and giving/receiving feedback.
• Contributing to projects as part of a small agile team, delivering results on time and within budget while also developing your skillsets and supporting production staff to grow theirs as well.

This job might be for you if:

• You have a 2-year+ technical degree or the equivalent combination of training and work experience
• You have competence with applied physics, geometry, algebra, and basic trigonometry
• You have CAD experience
• You have approximately 2+ years of experience in three or more of the following areas:
• • Mechanical design and analysis
  • Materials and processes
  • Mechanics
  • Manufacturing engineering
  • Electronic manufacturing techniques
• You have strong problem‑solving skills
• You have clear and effective communication skills—written, verbal, and documentation
• You are quick to learn new skills and open to taking on new responsibilities

• You must pass a background check and drug test per SEL requirements

It is a plus if you have:

• Worked with a wide variety of mechanical solutions or designed and deployed some already
• Experience supporting design, or general engineering in a manufacturing environment
• Written or run Design of Experiments

Physical Requirements

• Lift, push, pull and maneuver up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 35 pounds occasionally
• Sit and stand for at least 8 hours
• Vision correctable to 20/30 or better
• Ability to differentiate color
• Proficient in the use of computer keyboard devices

Pay Range: $31.00 - $46.00 per hour (plus $5.00/hr 2nd shift differential)

We set starting pay based on job‑related factors such as your experience, training, knowledge, and skills. We are looking to fill this position at the Tech I level, and we welcome applicants with a range of experience. Depending on your background, we may consider you for a different level, with compensation aligned accordingly.

Mechanical Engineering Technician I: $31.00 - $46.00 per hour

Mechanical Engineering Technician II: $33.00 - $50.00 per hour

Mechanical Engineering Technician III: $39.00 - $59.00 per hour
