Job summary

ASR International is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician / Shop Support Specialist in Missoula, MT to support the USDA NTDP. The role covers design, fabrication, machining, testing, and field readiness of specialized forestry equipment.

The onsite position involves working with government facilities and may be contingent on contract award, with duties including prototype fabrication, testing, and documentation in a technical development shop.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in engineering or related technical field with 5+ years fabrication-shop experience, or 10+ years experience without the degree.
  • Proficiency with fabrication equipment and established fabrication methods.
  • Experience reading CAD drawings and technical specifications.
  • Hands-on ability with metal fabrication processes and machine-shop equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to follow safety rules and work controls, and to lift 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with design and development of machinery, including drafting and CAD modeling.
  • Fabricate and assemble prototypes and components using welding, cutting, forming processes.
  • Operate shop tools and CNC equipment as assigned and qualified.
  • Conduct functional testing and collect performance data for new or modified equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot shop machinery and safety compliance.
  • Follow engineering drawings, SOPs, and safety requirements.
  • Document findings and suggest practical design or fabrication improvements.
  • Use design and data analysis software for documentation and reporting.
  • Assist with equipment installation and field support as needed.
  • Prepare maintenance logs, calibration records, inventories, and technical summaries.

Job description

ASR International is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician / Shop Support Specialist to support the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Technology and Development Program in Missoula, Montana.

This onsite role supports the design, fabrication, machining, testing, and field readiness of specialized equipment used in national forestry programs, including wildfire suppression, sustainable timber production, engineering, and recreation. The selected candidate will work in the NTDP technical development shop using government-furnished facilities, tools, equipment, and systems. This position may be contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with technical design and development of specialized machinery, including drafting and CAD modeling.
  • Fabricate and assemble prototypes, tools, equipment components, and other items using welding, cutting, forming, and related processes.
  • Operate lathes, mills, grinders, and other machine-shop tools; operate CNC equipment when assigned and qualified.
  • Conduct functional testing and validation of new or modified equipment, and collect and analyze performance data.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot shop machinery and tools to support safe operational readiness.
  • Follow engineering drawings, design specifications, shop standard operating procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Identify design or fabrication issues, document findings, and recommend practical improvements.
  • Use computer applications for design, data collection, analysis, technical documentation, and report preparation.
  • Assist with equipment installation, deployment, and field support when required.
  • Prepare or contribute to maintenance logs, calibration records, inventory evaluations, safety inspections, technical summaries, operating documentation, and reviews of CAD drawings.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in an engineering discipline or related technical field and at least five years of fabrication-shop experience; or at least 10 years of fabrication-shop experience without the specified degree.
  • Proficiency with fabrication equipment and established fabrication principles and methods.
  • Experience reading and working from CAD drawings, technical drawings, and design specifications.
  • Hands‑on ability with metal fabrication processes and machine-shop equipment relevant to the assigned work.
  • Strong attention to detail and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow shop and field safety rules, procedures, and work controls.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and spend extended periods standing or walking.
  • Ability to complete a background check and obtain credentials for access to government facilities, devices, and IT networks.
  • Availability to work onsite at the USDA NTDP facility in Missoula, Montana.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience with welding, cutting, forming, assembly, lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC equipment.
  • Experience creating or reviewing CAD models and mechanical drawings for fabricated components or assemblies.
  • Experience testing prototypes or modified equipment and documenting performance results.
  • Experience maintaining equipment logs, calibration records, inventories, safety inspection reports, or operating documentation.
  • Experience supporting field installation or deployment of specialized mechanical equipment.
