North Star Imaging (NSI) invites a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our on-site Rogers, Minnesota team. You will work with engineers to design and analyze NSI products, including X-ray and NDT systems, from prototype to production.

Qualifications

• Engineering student pursuing an engineering degree with GPA 3.0 or higher.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication.
• Working knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
• Ability to present complex technical information to internal customers.
• Familiarity with mechanical hardware development and qualification.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams (Sales, Supply Chain, Software, Manufacturing, Service).
• Strong grasp of mechanical principles, machine design, automation and robotics.
• Time management and prioritization skills.
• Self-motivated and willing to lead when needed.
• Experience with optical or x-ray imaging systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineers to provide robust mechanical design and technical support of NSI products and components.
• Analyze machine designs including motion control, robotics, and part handling.
• Design assemblies and components using SolidWorks.
• Prepare drawings and bills of materials for fabrication and assembly.
• Provide analysis of drive systems and structural assemblies using basic calculations and FEA.
• Interface with manufacturing for assembly, testing and installation support.
• Interface with project management to meet schedules and delivery requirements.
• Develop knowledge of X-ray and NDT techniques through NSI experts.
• Lead and participate in design reviews with cross functional teams and customers.
• Collaborate with software, controls and NDT engineers to develop solutions.

We're seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support existing products and help drive technical innovation across our industrial x-ray, automation, and CT product lines - from prototype to commercialization. This full-time, paid internship is on-site in Rogers, Minnesota, with opportunities to network across NSI and ITW's Minnesota divisions. You'll wrap up the summer by presenting your project and impact to NSI business leaders.

What You Will Do

• Primary Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with engineers to provide robust mechanical design and technical support of NSI products and components throughout product lifecycle.
  • Analyze and have input to complex machine designs incorporating motion control systems, robotics, and part handling in accordance with product requirements.
  • Design assemblies and components using SolidWorks.
  • Prepare detailed drawings and bills of materials for the fabrication and assembly of equipment.
  • Provide analysis of drive systems, structural assemblies and sub-components using basic calculation methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Interface with manufacturing to support product assembly, testing, troubleshooting and installation.
  • Interface with project/product management to ensure projects meet schedule and delivery requirements.
  • Develop working knowledge of X-ray and NDT techniques through NSI technical experts and practical application.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews for minor designs with cross functional teams and customers.
  • Collaborate with a cross functional team of software, controls, and NDT engineers to develop innovative solutions
• Secondary Responsibilities
  • Adhere to NSI’s waste management and recycling policies
  • Duties as assigned by manager

What We’re Looking For

• Junior or Senior pursuing an Engineering degree, 3.0 GPA or higher
• Excellent written and verbal English communication
• Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks)
• Ability to present complex technical information to internal customers
• Familiarity with mechanical hardware development and qualification
• Experience in working with cross-functional teams (Sales, Supply Chain, Software, Manufacturing, Service, etc.)
• Solid grasp of mechanical principles, machine design, automation, and robotics
• Strong time management and prioritization skills
• Self-motivated, continual learner, comfortable stepping into a lead role when needed
• Experience with optical or x-ray imaging systems a plus!

Compensation Information

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $19-29/hr. based on education and experience.
