Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern for our Oak Ridge office. You will assist in the design and analysis of building mechanical systems for industrial and government facilities, working with senior engineers on HVAC, ductwork, piping, and plumbing system design and calculations.

You will help deliver coordinated design packages, adhere to engineering procedures and quality standards, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams onsite.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an ABET-accredited BS Mechanical Engineering program.
• U.S. Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization at Oak Ridge.
• Ability to work with engineers and designers within budgets and schedules.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support our Oak Ridge office.

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will support the design and analysis of building mechanical systems for industrial and government facilities. This role involves assisting senior engineers with HVAC, ductwork, piping, and plumbing system design, engineering calculations, drawing development, and construction support.

The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to deliver fully coordinated, high-quality design packages, while adhering to Amentum’s engineering procedures and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist engineers with the design of HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems
• Perform basic engineering calculations under direct supervision, such as:

o Heating and cooling load calculations

o Pipe and duct sizing

o Equipment selection support

• Maintain organized project files, drawings, and documentation
• Follow established quality assurance programs and procedures

Basic Qualifications:

• Enrolled in B.S. Mechanical Engineering program accredited by ABET.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: U.S. Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
• Able to work in a group of engineers and designers to complete technical portions of projects within established budgets and schedules.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the Basic Qualifications the ideal candidate might also have:

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
• Self-motivated and team-oriented professional with high personal integrity

Work Environment:

• This role will be onsite at our Oak Ridge office

Compensation Details:

$21/HR - $31/HR
