Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a lead-level Mechanical Engineer with extensive nuclear experience to drive multidiscipline project execution. You will own safety, schedule, budget, and client experience across the project lifecycle while mentoring junior engineers.

The role supports a hybrid work arrangement with opportunities for career advancement in a U.S. government–related environment. A strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and machine design is essential.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain US Government security clearance.
  • BSME or MSME from ABET-accredited program with strong background and interest in thermodynamics/heat transfer/fluid mechanics/machine design or thermal systems.
  • 15+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally in a nuclear environment.
  • 5+ years in a firm/client liaison or lead role.
  • Experience with piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, or radioactive material handling designs.
  • Working knowledge of ASME codes and standards (eg., ASME B31 piping, Boiler & Pressure Vessel, AG-1).
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team setting.
  • Schedule and budget development and management.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, MicroStation, AutoCAD).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Own all aspects of project performance including safety, schedule, budget, reporting and client experience.
  • Develop project budgets, schedules and work plans; monitor to stay within budget and on schedule.
  • Prepare and review complex calculations and mechanical designs.
  • Prepare design inputs for drawings (P&IDs, layouts, general arrangements).
  • Prepare and review equipment specifications.
  • Communicate with vendors through clearly written specifications.
  • Prepare and review reports and studies.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

This position allows for a hybrid arrangement with a mix of work from home and in the office.

This is a lead-level engineering position that offers a variety of challenging opportunities in Mechanical Engineering and will provide an excellent opportunity for career advancement.

  • Responsible for multidiscipline project execution, coordination of resources from each discipline as required
  • Own for all aspects of project performance including safety, schedule, budget, reporting and client experience through entire project lifecycle
  • Develop project budgets, schedules, and project work plans; monitor own work to ensure it is completed within budget and on schedule
  • Prepare and review complex calculations
  • Prepare and review mechanical systems/equipment designs
  • Prepare documented design input for drawing production (i.e., P&IDs, machine layouts, general arrangements, etc.)
  • Prepare and review equipment specifications
  • Communicate with vendors via clearly written and complete specifications
  • Prepare and review reports/studies
  • Mentor junior engineers
Qualifications

Essential Skills And Experience
  • Must be able to obtain US Government security clearance
  • BSME or MSME degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program with a strong academic background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, or thermal systems
  • 15+ years of progressive responsible experience in mechanical engineering ideally in a nuclear environment
  • 5+ years of experience with serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead role
  • Experience with producing engineering designs and analysis for piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, and/or radioactive material handling systems
  • Working knowledge of Codes, Standards, and Regulations that apply to mechanical engineering design (eg., ASME B31 piping Codes, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, ASME AG-1)
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team setting
  • Schedule and budget development and management
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., Solidworks, Inventor, Microstation, AutoCAD)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Valued But Not Required Skills And Experience
  • Professional Engineer License (PE)
  • DOE experience preferred; commercial or Navy
  • Field engineering and construction experience
  • PMP certification
  • MBA degree

Compensation Range

$145,310 - $222,001

About This Business Unit

Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories.
