- Support preliminary design activities for the Navy’s future surface combatant ship
- Perform engineering analyses and calculations for shipboard mechanical and machinery systems
- Assist with preliminary designs, system concepts, and engineering alternatives
- Analyze mechanical and fluid systems and identify requirements, interfaces, constraints, and performance characteristics
- Develop and review technical documentation, drawings, diagrams, specifications, reports, and vendor documentation
- Evaluate existing shipboard systems, including components, functions, interfaces, operating characteristics, and system dynamics
- Support reliability engineering activities and engineering assessments
- Develop and analyze fluid-system and machinery models, including pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, tanks, and controls
- Use engineering software and computational tools to perform calculations and evaluate alternatives
- Document and validate engineering models and assumptions
- Support systems engineering, digital engineering, system architecture, and MBSE activities
- Maintain engineering data, calculations, model documentation, and configuration-controlled technical products
- Prepare memoranda, reports, calculations, presentations, diagrams, spreadsheets, plans, specifications, and requirements documents
- Research technical standards, specifications, regulations, and engineering references
- Provide engineering support during machinery research, development, testing, and evaluation
- Participate in technical meetings, demonstrations, testing activities, and site visits
- Assist with test plans, data collection, engineering assessments, and test documentation
- Review test data and identify trends, anomalies, and potential engineering issues
- Support technical investigations at government, shipyard, laboratory, and vendor facilities
- Participate in multidisciplinary engineering meetings and technical reviews
- Track technical action items and prepare meeting minutes and status updates
- Develop task-level schedules, work plans, and technical approaches
- Communicate findings and project status to the Lead Engineer and team
- Coordinate technical interfaces, dependencies, and potential conflicts
- Support engineering and acquisition documentation for DoD programs
- Assume increasing responsibility for systems, engineering analyses, technical documents, and modeling activities
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a closely related engineering discipline
- 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience; strong candidates with less than two years of experience will be considered
- Understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics, and/or machine design
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, technical reports, and equipment documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize technical information and communicate engineering findings clearly in written and verbal form
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team
- Ability and willingness to work in the Philadelphia-area engineering and shipbuilding environment and travel periodically
- U.S. citizenship required
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Secret clearance within 90 days of hire
- Must have a valid U.S. passport or the ability to obtain one upon position acceptance
- Experience with shipboard mechanical, machinery, HVAC, piping, propulsion, auxiliary, or other HM&E systems preferred
- Experience with PIPE-FLO, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, or comparable fluid-system analysis/modeling tools preferred
- Experience with CAD or engineering drawing tools preferred
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, or other engineering computational tools preferred
- Familiarity with systems engineering, MBSE, or digital engineering concepts preferred
- Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler, PhoenixModelCenter, BOXARR, Innoslate, or comparable platforms preferred
- Experience supporting testing, demonstrations, laboratory activities, or equipment evaluations preferred
- Familiarity with Navy, DoD, commercial marine, or applicable engineering standards and specifications preferred
- EIT certification or progress toward professional engineering licensure preferred
- Previous government or defense program experience preferred
