Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) seeks a Mechanical Engineer in Training to support senior engineers on diverse facility and infrastructure projects.

The role emphasizes learning company design standards, applying technical methods, and collaborating with project teams to deliver on time and within scope. Qualified candidates will hold an ABET‑accredited degree, have two years of experience, and pass the FE exam as an EIT.

Qualifications

  • ABET accredited engineering degree (Bachelor's or Master’s) with two years of experience.
  • FE exam passed and certified EIT with state licensure board.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of engineering theories and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of discipline-specific software (Trace700 and SKM).
  • Knowledge of drafting/design procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes/regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work with others.
  • Strong written communication and technical writing capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply company technical standards and procedures on client projects.
  • Observe industry standards and practices for design analyses using industry software.
  • Under supervision, assist in design processes and analyses on projects.
  • Assist with production of designs using Revit and/or CAD and oversee development by designers.
  • Perform computer-based engineering calculations and system design functions.
  • Coordinate project designs with other disciplines to determine equipment needs and procedures.
  • Attend meetings with owners, clients, or architects as needed.
  • Assist in developing man-hour budgets and track tasks to budget.
  • Contribute to development of technical documentation, proposals, and presentations.
  • Communicate design requirements with architects, contractors, and suppliers to define scope.
  • Join senior staff on site visits to verify field conditions and progress against design specs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specs, schematics, and reports.
  • Pursue internal training to expand technical knowledge.
  • Potentially train EIT I on software, standards, and codes.
  • Support project managers in facilitating project duties as needed.

Looking for a Mechanical Engineer in Training

A leading comprehensive engineering design and consulting firm, SSR provides innovative solutions for clients with facility and infrastructure challenges. SSR has multiple locations across the US and partners with clients in varied markets to deliver advanced solutions.

The Mechanical Engineer in Training assists the senior engineering staff in the execution of the technical activities required on assigned projects and learns discipline‑specific technical standards and procedures. They assist the project team in producing projects on time, within budget, and consistent with industry standards. Under supervision, they participate in technical studies, investigations, and designs on assigned projects. EIT II differs from EIT I in level of responsibility, decision‑making, and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learns company technical standards and procedures during the execution of projects for clients
  • Observes and learns the industry standards and practices of design analyses using industry software
  • Under supervision, assists in the execution of design processes and analysis on assigned projects and requests assistance from senior design staff when needed
  • Assists with production of designs using Revit and/or CADD and oversees design development by designers as assigned
  • Under supervision, performs computer‑based engineering calculations and system design functions
  • Assists the design team in the coordination of project designs with other disciplines to determine equipment needs, provide input for operating procedures, and provide technical information
  • Attends and participates in meetings with owners, clients, or architects as needed
  • Assists in the development of man‑hour budgets and performs tasks in accordance with the budget
  • Assists project team in the development of technical documentation, proposals, and presentations
  • Communicates design requirements with architects, contractors, and equipment sales representatives to determine project scope and feasibility
  • Accompanies senior design staff in performing project job site visits to investigate field conditions and monitor progress based on design specifications, owner expectations, and building codes
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, schematics, and engineering reports
  • Actively attends internal and external training and other educational opportunities to obtain knowledge in necessary technical areas
  • May train EIT I on industry software, engineering standards, and/or codes
  • May assist the Project Manager in facilitating some project duties as required (e.g., attending/leading meetings, coordinating with clients, or other project facilitation activities)
Ideal Candidate Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college with two years applicable experience
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and be certified EIT with a state licensure board
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Knowledge of engineering theories and methodologies
  • Knowledge of discipline‑specific software (i.e., Trace700 and SKM)
  • Knowledge of drafting and design procedures and standards
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations
  • Interpersonal skills – ability to interact positively and work effectively with others
  • Comprehension – ability to understand information, ideas, and direction presented in writing and/or verbally communicated
  • Written communication skills – ability to clearly deliver a message through written words using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • Technical writing skills – skilled in the area of summarizing or explaining technical information in a clear, concise, and accurate way, communicating the point intended
