Job summary

Holtec is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II – Nuclear Systems to join our team in supporting the analysis, design, and structural integrity assessment of mechanical components for advanced reactors including SMRs. You will apply stress analysis, fracture mechanics, and fatigue evaluation within ASME and nuclear regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities include analyzing components with leading tools (ANSYS, LS-DYNA, SolidWorks), reviewing vendor reports, mentoring engineers, and supporting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 5-7 years of experience in mechanical design analysis and component integrity.
  • Knowledge of material degradation mechanisms including brittle fracture and fatigue.
  • Experience with numerical modeling and simulation tools such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, SolidWorks.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical design and stress analysis for ASME Section III Class 1, 2, and 3 components and supports.
  • Conduct detailed stress analysis using industry tools (ANSYS, LS-DYNA, MATLAB, Mathcad).
  • Perform fracture mechanics and fatigue life evaluations of metal structures.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear codes and standards (ASME BPVC II/III/XI, ANSI/AISC N690, ANSI N14.6).
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables including stress reports, design calculations, and fitness-for-service evaluations.
  • Review vendor reports for technical acceptance and regulatory/contract compliance.
  • Support fabrication, construction, and field issue resolution.
  • Respond to regulator requests for information in support of licensing activities.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership to other team members.

Job description

TheMechanical Engineer II – Nuclear Systems will support the analysis, design, and structural integrity assessment of mechanical components (heat exchangers, condensers, tanks, etc.) and reactor internals for advanced reactors including SMRs. This role combines technical expertise in stress analysis, fracture mechanics, fatigue evaluation, and regulatory compliance with a proven background in multidisciplinary project execution.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical design and stress analysis for ASME Section III Class 1, 2, and 3 components and supports
  • Conduct detailed stress analysis using industry tools (ANSYS, LS-DYNA, MATLAB, Mathcad)
  • Perform fracture mechanics and fatigue life evaluations of metal structures
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear codes and standards (ASME BPVC II/III/XI, ANSI/AISC N690, ANSI N14.6)

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years of experience in mechanical design analysis and component integrity
  • Knowledge of material degradation mechanisms including brittle fracture and fatigue
  • Experience with numerical modeling and simulation tools such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, Solidworks
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) license
  • Experience with PWR or SMR reactor systems
  • Familiarity with ASME Section III Class 1, 2, 3 component design and analysis
  • Familiarity with nuclear regulatory requirements (10CFR50, NUREG-0800)
  • Experience with seismic design and analysis of equipment
  • Eligibility to work under 10 CFR Part 810
