Job summary

Collins Aerospace in Wilson, North Carolina seeks a developing Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Fire & Overheat Linear Detection group on-site. You will develop, modify, integrate, qualify, certify, produce, and support detectors for military and commercial use.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with mechanical assemblies, drawings, parts lists, weldments, and GD&T.
  • Experience with metal fabrication: finishing, machined parts, welding.

  • Experience creating engineering reports.
  • Typically requires STEM degree and minimum 2 years experience (or advanced degree).

Responsibilities

  • Generate new designs and revisions independently or with senior engineers.
  • Interpret requirements and translate into mechanical design for medium complexity components.
  • Support full system life cycle: proposal, development, qualification, certification, after-market.
  • Collaborate with systems, drafting, test, manufacturing, QA, logistics for manufacturability.
  • Recommend disposition of test or part deviation requests.
  • Participate in design reviews and ensure high-quality drawings and docs.
  • Use processes and tools during hardware development.
  • Contribute to new technology development for detectors and components.
  • Support customer reviews and meetings; travel ~5%.

The Mechanical Design Engineering team is looking for a developing mechanical engineer to join our Fire & Overheat Linear Detection group in Wilson, North Carolina!

You will participate in the development, modification, integration, qualification, certification, production and field support of aircraft fire and overheat detection systems and components for military and commercial applications. Our devices include pneumatic, eutectic and thermistor linear overheat and fire detectors. You will work with existing and new application designs and product improvement, defining design drawings, testing, evaluation and data packages. Work may also include R&D for new technologies including fiber optics to maintain the company’s position as a leader in the industry. Your ability to work in fast-paced, multi-disciplinary teams with effective communication and attention to detail for timely project execution is imperative. Familiarity with machined part drawings and specification, weld specifications, mechanical assemblies, switches, eutectic salts and/or thermistors is preferred. This is an onsite position based in Wilson, North Carolina.

What You Will Do
  • Contributor working independently and with senior engineers to generate new designs, review internal and external change requests, create redline revisions, and support test and documentation of mechanical hardware and assemblies.
  • Participate in hardware engineering requirements interpretation and implementation into design for medium complexity components of mechanical designs.
  • Contribute to the full system life cycle including proposal, development, qualification, certification and aftermarket support.
  • Work closely with other engineering and operations disciplines (e.g., systems engineering, drafting, test engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality assurance, logistics, etc.) to ensure that mechanical design and testing is appropriate for the project/product design approach and manufacturability.
  • Recommend disposition of operations/supplier test or part deviation requests.
  • Participate in and contribute to new design and revision reviews in support to producing high quality drawings and documents.
  • Understand and utilize the appropriate processes and tools during development of hardware.
  • Participate in new technology development for fire and overheat detectors and components.
  • Integrate with and provide support for customer reviews and meetings.
  • Travel as necessary ~5%.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Familiarity with technical design documentation such as mechanical assemblies, fabrication drawings, parts lists, weldments, installation drawings and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with metal fabrication techniques to include finishing, machined parts, and welding.
  • Adaptability and organization to support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience creating engineering reports.
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree,

The salary range for this role is 68,900 USD - 131,100 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
