Job description

Generac Home is hiring a Mechanical Engineer II. The Mechanical Engineer will support the design, analysis, validation, and development of mechanical components and assemblies related to embedded controls and power generation products. The individual will work on mechanical design activities for controller assemblies and supporting electronic hardware while collaborating closely with electrical and controls engineering teams.

Major Responsibilities

  • Mechanical design of electronic controller assemblies used in generator products.
  • Development and support of user interface/control modules that customers interact with to operate generators.
  • Mechanical design support for accessory products including:
  • Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs)
  • Battery chargers
  • I/O modules
  • Thermal management and heat dissipation solutions within electronic assemblies.
  • 3D modeling and Product lifecycle management (PLM)
  • Product-specific mechanical design of new products and enhancements, from concept through production release.
  • Design switching mechanisms and other product-level mechanical assemblies for embedded controls and load interconnection products.
  • Perform product-level mechanical analysis and simulation, including structural, thermal, tolerance stack-up, vibration, shock, and fatigue, to validate designs.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes, and plan, conduct, and document mechanical testing in the lab and on product.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D models, drawings, and specifications using CAD tools, consistent with the portfolio drawing release and ECN standards owned by the platform team.
  • Partner with the Engineering Platforms & Specialties organization on enclosure design, material selection, and harness design, ensuring product designs align with common platform standards.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability, Design for Assembly, and Design for Test principles throughout the design process.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews, tolerance analyses, and FMEA and DFMEA activities.
  • Collaborate with firmware, electrical, systems engineering, product management, and operations to define requirements, interfaces, and integration.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing on tooling, fabrication methods, and component qualification.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical design issues, including support for production and field issues.
  • Occasional travel to other

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related engineering degree required. Advanced degree preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of mechanical engineering experience in product design and development, with demonstrated success taking products from concept through production.
  • Experience designing enclosures, sheet metal, plastics, and electromechanical assemblies preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert proficiency with 3D CAD (such as Creo, SolidWorks, or NX) and PLM and drawing release systems.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical analysis and simulation methods, including FEA, thermal analysis, and tolerance stack-up.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for sheet metal, plastics (injection molding), casting, and electromechanical assembly.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to resolve complex mechanical engineering problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
  • Ability to translate technical information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams and with external suppliers.
  • Strong commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Windchill PLM experience.
  • Experience with controls products, embedded systems, generators, power electronics, or similar industries.
