Job description

Summary

The New York Power Authority is a dynamic organization known for our innovative projects and collaborative work environment. We are passionate about developing and delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions. The Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to play a key role in the design, planning, and implementation of energy infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will manage engineering tasks related to power generation facilities, leading research, design, and commissioning activities focused on enhancing NYPA's energy services. They will ensure compliance with codes, quality standards, safety, reliability, schedule, and performance throughout all activities and deliverables.

This role involves analyzing design effectiveness and functional reliability, and implementing decarbonization, energy efficiency, and clean energy projects involving mechanical infrastructure such as rotational, thermal, fluid, refrigeration, fire protection, and process systems.

Experience with feasibility evaluations, designing, permitting, cost-benefit analysis, construction, and commissioning of complex interdisciplinary mechanical energy efficiency projects in urban and rural environments is essential.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide lead engineering support for design modifications, equipment applications, failure research, and operations and maintenance activities.
  2. Conduct site visits for condition assessments and equipment evaluations, developing technical recommendations.
  3. Respond to emergencies outside of normal hours when required.
  4. Coordinate cross-disciplinary activities for project development and execution.
  5. Apply relevant codes, standards, and procedures appropriately.
  6. Evaluate projects to ensure compliance with engineering requirements and Authority specifications.
  7. Lead in state-of-the-art engineering and analytical techniques.
  8. Review designs, calculations, specifications, and reports from internal and external sources.
  9. Guide mechanical design and drafting personnel in developing project drawings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in designing, operating, and maintaining mechanical systems specific to the electric utility industry and power system components.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems in commercial and industrial facilities.
  • Ability to apply technical principles aligned with NYPA’s policies and objectives.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Capability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with mechanical design or forecasting software is preferred.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
  • At least 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • NY State Engineer in Training certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 10% travel within NY State.
  • Ability to access all plant areas and conduct physical evaluations, including working at heights.
