Job description

Help us build and test reliable mechanical systems for radar and multi-sensor products by turning engineering concepts into working hardware.

MatrixSpace develops AI-enabled radar and sensing systems that help people understand what's happening in the world around them. By combining advanced radar, edge computing, and AI, we deliver situational awareness in environments where traditional sensing solutions struggle.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to support the design, development, fabrication, integration, and testing of radar and multi-sensor hardware. You’ll work closely with development teams to turn designs into prototypes, troubleshoot integration issues, and support hardware through lab testing, field testing, and customer demonstrations. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for an engineer who can execute effectively with guidance while continuing to build technical depth and ownership.

What You'll Do
  • Support the design and development of mechanical components and electro-mechanical assemblies for radar and multi-sensor products using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
  • Create and modify parts and assemblies using machined components, sheet metal, fasteners, and additive manufacturing.
  • Build, integrate, and test prototype hardware and multi-module systems in lab and field environments.
  • Diagnose mechanical and basic electrical issues in integrated systems and work with electrical, firmware, and systems engineers to resolve them.
  • Develop and maintain assembly procedures, build instructions, wiring documentation, and other hardware documentation.
  • Support component selection, procurement, and inventory needs for prototypes and test systems.
  • Participate in product testing, customer demonstrations, and field deployments, including limited travel to our Hoffman Estates, Illinois site.
What We're Looking For
  • You have a solid foundation in mechanical engineering and enjoy working directly with physical hardware. You’re comfortable moving between CAD, hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting, and you work well with engineers across multiple disciplines.
  • This position requires working directly or indirectly with the US Government in restricted environments. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship and may be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future.
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience/background.
  • 2-3 years of relevant professional experience, including applicable internships, co-ops, or substantial hands-on project experience.
  • Experience using 3D CAD tools, with SolidWorks preferred, and the ability to create and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with common shop and lab tools such as drills, saws, hand tools, multimeters, and soldering equipment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical tolerances, fasteners, materials, and assembly practices.
  • Basic electro-mechanical assembly and troubleshooting skills, including wiring, soldering, and component-level diagnosis.
  • Experience building, testing, or troubleshooting physical hardware in a lab, prototype, or product-development environment.
Someone Who Will Thrive in This Role
  • Enjoys turning designs into physical hardware and learning through hands-on iteration.
  • Approaches open-ended engineering problems with practical judgment and curiosity.
  • Works carefully and methodically when assembling, testing, and troubleshooting hardware.
  • Collaborates effectively across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Can manage multiple build and test priorities while maintaining an organized and safe workspace.
Bonus Points
  • Experience creating part drawings using Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) practices consistent with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping, or other fast-turn fabrication methods.
  • Experience with radar, sensing systems, ruggedized electronics, or other integrated electro-mechanical products.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and test methods used for hardware systems.

You’ll be part of the team responsible for turning MatrixSpace sensing technology into reliable physical products that can perform in real-world environments. Your work will directly support prototype development, system integration, testing, and field use. If that sounds exciting, we'd love to hear from you.
