Job Title: Mechanical Engineer I

Location: Remote with travel to Leesburg, VA, Columbia Falls, MT, and Cedar Rapids, IA

Job Summary

This individual will have core responsibilities in design, testing, and maintenance of mechanical designs for uAvionix’s devices. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for avionics systems, focusing on miniaturization and optimization for size, weight, and power (SWaP).
2. Create detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
3. Perform structural and thermal analyses on mechanical designs to ensure product reliability in aviation environments.
4. Design mechanical components and enclosures to meet DO-160 environmental testing requirements, including temperature, altitude, vibration, shock, and EMI/EMC compliance.
5. Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate mechanical designs with electronic components.
6. Support manufacturing processes by creating documentation, assembly instructions, and tooling designs.
7. Collaborate with the marketing and design team to refine mechanical designs.
8. Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues during prototyping and production phases.
9. Identify and implement design improvements for existing products to enhance performance and manufacturability.
10. Research and evaluate new materials and manufacturing technologies to drive innovation.
11. Maintain comprehensive documentation of designs, test results, and engineering changes.
12. Create and modify product labels and graphics using Adobe Illustrator.
13. Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
14. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1. Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software for 3D modeling and design, required.
2. Experience with mechanical design for small form factor products, required.
3. Knowledge of materials selection and manufacturing processes for precision components, recommended.
4. Understanding of DO-160 environmental testing requirements for avionics systems, recommended.
5. Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator for creating product labels and graphics, recommended.
6. Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) principles, recommended.
7. Basic understanding of electrical engineering concepts as they relate to mechanical design, recommended.
8. Ability to analyze and solve complex mechanical design challenges.
9. Capacity to analyze a problem from multiple perspectives and explore creative solutions.
10. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
11. Excellent teamwork and communication abilities.
12. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with excellent time management and organizational skills.
13. Demonstrated multitasking ability, self-sufficiency, and attention to detail.
14. Passion for aviation and UAS technology.
15. US Citizen or green card holder required.

Education/Experience:

1. BS in mechanical engineering, or similar field, required.
2. 1-3 years’ work experience in engineering or related, required.
3. Proven experience in mechanical design, preferably in a product development environment, required.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
2. Must be able to lift, up to 25 pounds at times.
3. Travel up to 10% of the time.

*Position can be remote with occasional travel or based at one of our locations in Cedar Rapids, IA, Leesburg, VA or Columbia Falls, MT.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000
