BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Randolph & Baldwin, Inc. is a manufacturing and engineering company specializing in Defense Systems and Ocean Systems. We manufacture a diverse range of parts from small, machined components to electrical chassis assemblies to extremely large weldments. Our manufacturing capabilities involve tight tolerancing and manufacturing processes at the highest level of quality.
JOB SUMMARY
This is a fast-paced role on a floor where jobs move quickly and priorities can change in a day. As a Mechanical Engineer I, you will contribute to the design, development, testing, and implementation of mechanical systems and products, working under the direction of a senior engineer. A working knowledge of machining, welding, and casting - and of how each process shapes a design - is a strong plus in this role. You will support new and existing product engineering design and development, and will build the technical expertise needed to take independent ownership of design tasks over time. The role requires a commitment to high-quality standards, strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to switch between jobs at a moment's notice in a collaborative environment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and revise 3D models, detail drawings, and assembly drawings in CAD under the direction of a senior engineer.
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 and drawing revision practice per ASME Y14.35.
- Apply engineering principles to develop efficient and manufacturable designs.
- Perform tolerance analysis and ensure design feasibility with respect to cost, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Work directly with machinists, welders, and fabricators on the floor to resolve build issues and interpret drawing intent.
- Work with our supply chain network to send out requests for quote for parts, materials, and components, and review vendor responses on cost and capability.
- Track lead times for purchased parts and components, and flag schedule risk to the project team early.
- Oversee prototype fabrication and test: run the test plan, read the data, iterate the design, and keep it compliant with industry and company standards.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, such as engineering specifications, test reports, and design records.
- Participate in design reviews and audits, and support quality assurance activities.
- Support project timelines, resources, and budget tracking to help ensure timely and within-scope delivery.
- Identify opportunities for product or process improvements and contribute to implementation initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.
- 0-3 years' experience in manufacturing; relevant co-op, internship, or capstone project experience counts.
- Must be a U.S. Person as defined under ITAR 22 CFR 120.62 in order to access export-controlled technical data.
- Able to work on-site in Ayer, MA, and to spend regular time in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in CAD and Microsoft Office.
- Comfortable with the trigonometry and geometry behind a setup, and able to check part dimensions yourself.
- Able to work at pace - juggling several jobs, switching between them at a moment's notice, and staying organized and detail-oriented as priorities shift.
- An analytical problem solver who can explain a design decision clearly to a machinist or a customer, in writing or in person, and who is willing to teach what they know.
Preferred
- Not shy about putting hands on the part - building a mockup, self-inspecting a feature, and finding creative but defensible ways to demonstrate that a part meets its requirements rather than waiting for someone else to check it.
- Proficiency in PTC Creo.
- Familiarity with the operation of CNC CMMs, CMM arms, and/or laser trackers.
- Working knowledge of machining, welding, and casting processes, and of how each drives design decisions.
- Solid grasp of engineering drawings, dimensioning, and GD&T, including the inspection methods used to verify them.
- Familiarity with inspection equipment including but not limited to calipers, micrometers, pin gages, thread gages, plug gages, and height gages.
- Familiarity with 3D printing processes and design considerations.
COMPENSATION
- Bonus Range: $4,000 - $7,000
BENEFITS
- Individual healthcare plans with an HSA.
- Upon successful completion of probationary period: 401K with company match.
- Tier based bonus distributions determined by company performance.
- Yearly profit-sharing contributions to your 401K account, based on previous year's profits.
