Mechanical Engineer – Helmet Development

We are looking for a highly motivated and organized Mechanical Engineer to take the lead on product design and the engineering execution of next generation Specialized helmets. Use your technical expertise to design, prototype, and develop new helmets on time and helmet technology on both R&D and production projects. The primary function of this position is to work collaboratively with Product Management, Design, and Graphics in executing the helmet business strategy to achieve its commercial goals.

How You’ll Make a Difference

  • CAD Design: Advanced modeling in Creo preferred. Ability to translate 2D sketches, skeletons and clearance models into “watertight” organic surface models.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with other Industrial Designers, Engineers and Graphic Designers to bring to life the Best-in-Class helmets in the industry
  • Prototyping: Take concepts from sketches into testable prototypes. Work with designers and test technician to explore new materials, processes and technologies.
  • Coordination with factories: Communicate with factories regarding product development, project tracking and tooling changes. Work with factory to ensure accuracy prior to production tooling.
  • On-time delivery: Own your part of the process and deliver quality work on time. Keep a close eye on multiple projects, tracking at different launch seasons.
  • Coordinate and lead 3D prototyping: Work with industry-leading technology to take 3D models, to 3D printed products. Print, setup and test parts during research and development process.
  • Development to production: Work through technical challenges that arise in commercialization. Work closely with the factory to find innovative and effective solutions to get product to market on time.
  • Fit: Become the expert on helmet fit and work with designers, engineers and PM to ensure helmets are best-in-class fit. Lead development on fit.

  • Ability to balance multiple projects between production-based research and blue-sky opportunities
  • Plan and perform engineering research, design, testing, and development tasks
  • Learn, create, and implement new engineering tools to create winning, best-in-class helmets
  • Create engineering specification packages that effectively communicate product intent
  • Work in conjunction with Industrial Design and Testing/Development Engineering on helmet testing to pass internal and external testing/certification standards
  • Translate customer / rider feedback into specifications for Specialized helmet products
  • Coordinate engineering activities with domestic & foreign design teammates
  • Develop collaborative relationships with vendors and work with them to develop new technologies
  • Stay informed of new technology through technical publications and seminars
  • Work in conjunction with S-racing teams to achieve the highest helmet performance
  • Assist legal department with patents and related issues for new and existing products
  • Travel as necessary both domestically and internationally (typically China, Vietnam, and Europe)

Required Skills

  • Proficient mechanical aptitude and materials knowledge
  • Innovation mindset geared towards rapid prototype creation and evaluation
  • Computer aided engineering skills including solid modeling, advanced surfacing, simulation programs and advanced mathematical modeling and analysis programs
  • Experience with Aerodynamic (Wind Tunnel) testing is highly desirable
  • Ability to work with 3D printing software and machinery
  • Be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Detail oriented with proficient planning skills, initiative, and accountability
  • Excellent communication skills, able to interact effectively with domestic and international teammates
  • Ability to interpret data and solve complex problems
  • Positive attitude that fosters continuous improvement and flexibility
  • Competent computer database, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing abilities

Helmet Skills And Knowledge

  • Understanding of bicycle helmet impact testing and analysis of testing
  • Understanding of helmet fit systems, visor mechanisms and internal structures is helpful
  • Experience researching and designing helmets including new helmet materials and technologies
  • Ability to suggest new materials and processes to improve Specialized helmet products
  • Experience translating customer feedback on helmets into engineering specifications
  • Ability to research and development new testing methods and standards to improve helmet performance and quality

EDUCATION / TRAINING

  • 5+ years of experience in an engineering related field with a high degree of product R&D focus
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • A deep understanding and knowledge of manufacturing for foam, plastics and composites
  • Post graduate studies or work experience in materials science or engineering related field is a plus
  • Experience in the set-up and use of data acquisition systems
  • Basic machine shop and fabrication skills a plus
  • A passion for cycling is a must!

Pay

Below is a summary of compensation elements for this role at the company if based in the following locations:

California Base Pay Range: ($85,971 - $141,852 )

  • At Specialized, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package and will depend on your work experience, skills, certification, and location.
