Qualifications

  • Knowledge of mechanical seals, lubrication, couplings, and instrumentation.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude and shop skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills.

Responsibilities

  • Create product requirement documents.
  • Analyze hazards and risks associated with the product.
  • Select materials, design components and assemblies, and implement joining techniques.
  • Write test plans, conduct test measurements and apply statistical data analysis to verify design solutions.
  • Prepare design concepts for client presentations through sketches, renderings, models, controlled drawings, and reports.
  • Create CAD layouts and detail drawings of new products using Pro/Engineer and/or SolidWorks.
  • Create mechanical and electro-mechanical prototypes using in-house and external resources.
  • Perform stress, static, cost, and tolerance analysis.
  • Interface with contract manufacturers and OEM/COTS part providers.
  • Above all, make prudent, clever, careful, and decisive design choices.

Job description

Daedalus is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for an entry level position designing and developing products in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Some travel and off-site work may occasionally be necessary. Work could be for various industries including: medical, telecommunications, safety, and consumer products.

Other disciplines at Daedalus include user needs research, industrial design, GUI design, software, and electrical engineering. Daedalus provides an environment where everyone needs to be a self-starter and have the ability to work both independently and in a team.

Responsibilities
  • Create product requirement documents.
  • Analyze the hazards and other risks associated with the product.
  • Select component materials, design components and assemblies, implement joining techniques such as snap fitting, welding, bonding, and mechanical fastening.
  • Write test plans, conduct test measurements and apply statistical data analysis techniques to verify design solutions.
  • Prepare design concepts for client presentations through sketches, renderings, models, controlled drawings, and reports.
  • Create CAD layouts and detail drawings of new products using Pro/Engineer and/or SolidWorks.
  • Create mechanical and electro-mechanical prototypes in a variety of contexts using both in-house and external resources.
  • Perform stress, statics, cost, and tolerance analysis.
  • Interface with outside resources such as contract manufacturers and providers of OEM or COTS parts.
  • Above all, make prudent, clever, careful, and decisive design choices.
Requirements
  • BSME required. MS a plus.
  • Working knowledge of test plans and conducting experiments to verify design solutions (measurements and statistical data analysis).
  • Working knowledge of Solidworks. Other CAD package experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of plastic materials and molding processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge of sheetmetal fabrication and assembly techniques is a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical seals, sealing systems, couplings, drivers, lubrication systems, and instrumentation systems is a plus.
  • Possess excellent hands-on mechanical aptitude and shop skills.
  • Have the ability to work as an individual with minimal guidance.
  • Must demonstrate excellent skills in both verbal and written English.
