Job summary

Blue Origin is hiring a tooling and fixtures engineer to design production tooling for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn programs. You will apply mechanical design methods, perform analyses, and work with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable tooling for aerospace manufacturing.

Responsibilities include managing projects from vendor selection to commissioning, ensuring safety, cost, quality, and schedule targets, and applying ASME Y14.5 standards in drafting and documentation.

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of tooling and fixture design, build and commissioning.
  • FEM analysis experience and hand calculations (Freebody diagrams).
  • Proficient in CAD-based modeling and drafting.
  • Strong DFM and DFA with production readiness.
  • Knowledge of materials, GD&T, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with CNC, welding, sheet metal, and related processes.

Responsibilities

  • Design production, development, test, integration tooling for Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn.
  • Integrate mechanical design concepts and analysis across projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interpret and apply ASME Y14.5 drafting standards.
  • Address tooling challenges- fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, weldments.
  • Collaborate with designers and engineers to achieve cradle-to-grave metrics.
  • Manage projects: vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, installation, proof testing, commissioning.
  • Set and maintain schedules and budgets to meet project goals.

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will Apply standard engineering knowledge and methods to design tools and equipment for manufacturing and operation of aerospace systems. Researches, develops and implements improvements to tooling and equipment to improve product quality. Works with engineering to identify problems with performance. Recommends solutions or enhancements. Documents experiments, tests and tooling development activities in reports. Supports production assemblers and operations with new or modified tools.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Design production, development, test, integration, and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
  • Capable of integrating concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several projects in a fast-paced environment -- projects will vary in size and scale.
  • Ability to interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) when creating drawings.
  • Handle a wide range of technical design challenges related to all types of assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
  • Close collaboration with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to achieve the best possible cradle-to-grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance/refurbishment)
  • Manage projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning of custom tooling.
  • Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience with design, build, and commissioning of tooling, fixtures, custom machines or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis in addition to the ability to perform hand calculations including the creation of Freebody diagrams
  • Proven experience with CAD based design software for modeling and drafting.
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) including experience taking products from development design to rate production
  • Proven understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis
  • Proven understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines such as CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly, inspection, etc.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with industry standards, such as ASME BTH-1, aluminum design manual, and AISC.
  • Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, etc.
  • Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems
  • Experience with Analysis packages such as: ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, NX Advance Simulation, etc.
