Job summary

Barry-Wehmiller is seeking Mechanical Engineers (Levels I–IV) to design, analyze, test, and improve machines for the converting and packaging industries. These roles are primarily onsite at our Green Bay facility, with onsite and hybrid opportunities in Waukesha and Madison.

You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, create CAD designs and drawings, review supplier proposals, and support manufacturing with troubleshooting and process improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 0–2 years for Level I up to 8 years for Level IV in manufacturing engineering.
• Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks/PDM or Autodesk Inventor/Vault).

Responsibilities

Job Description:

• Barry-Wehmiller Converting is growing, and we currently have Mechanical Engineer positions available at all levels. These are primarily onsite roles at our Green Bay facility, and onsite and hybrid opportunities are also available in Waukesha and Madison.

Consideration for a specific level and team will be determined through the interview process based. Candidates will likely meet with multiple team leaders in a streamlined process to determine best fit.

Relocation assistance may be available for candidates outside of a commutable distance to one of our facilities.

The Mechanical Engineer (Levels I-IV) performs engineering duties related to the design, development, and modification of machines, systems, and components in support of the business segment. This role applies sound engineering principles with consideration for manufacturing feasibility, cost, safety, and operational performance with supervision appropriate to the level of experience. Responsibilities include designing, analyzing, testing, installing, and supporting mechanically functioning equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develop concepts for new machine functions, enhancements, and upgrades.
• Create technical solutions, detailed designs, and assembly drawings.
• Interface with suppliers to clarify system functionality and technical requirements.
• Support Purchasing in evaluating technical proposals, costs, and supplier capabilities.
• Develop and maintain product concept catalogs and specification workbooks.
• Read, interpret, and apply information from blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
• Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical guidance.
• Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other technical data to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements.
• Specify system components or direct product modifications to ensure compliance with engineering design and performance specifications.
• Investigate equipment failures, diagnose root causes, and recommend corrective actions to maintenance teams.
• Perform assigned work independently under minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree (4-year) in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related technical field required.
• Minimum of 0-2 years of related experience for Mechanical Engineer I position up to a minimum of 8 years of experience in manufacturing in an Engineering role required for Mechanical Engineer IV.
• Proficient to advanced proficiency with high-level functionality in 3D CAD (SolidWorks/PDM and/or Autodesk Inventor/Vault)
• OEM experience in machine component design is preferred.
• Experience in hygiene, personal care, or roll converting industries is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Demonstrated experience supporting or leading project teams and contributing to project management activities.
• Ability to solve complex engineering problems and eliminate only the most critical issues.
• Strong foundational knowledge of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, and machine systems.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% as required.
• Design/alteration of moderately complex machines, sections, systems or units
• Prepare layouts using CAD tools
• Evaluation of moderately complex designs; make engineering changes
• Prepare BOM, assembly drawings/schematics using CAD for moderately complex equipment
• Assist in supporting manufacturing/assembly teams
• Support field teams with technical assistance as required
• Other duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Occasional exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards
• Travel by air or car occasionally
