Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer focused on power plant systems, applying thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics to project work.

You will prepare calculations, evaluations and technical reports to support client recommendations, conduct equipment sizing, optimization, and selection, and participate in system engineering with project teams.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with strong thermodynamics and energy conversion focus.
  • 3+ years of experience in the power industry and ability to prepare calculations and reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and practical engineering judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Directly apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and power plant engineering knowledge.
  • Prepare calculations, evaluations and technical reports to support client recommendations and reviews; size equipment and optimize designs.
  • Engage in system engineering, including design, modification and analysis of power plant mechanical systems.
  • Travel to client/vendor offices or plant sites for reviews and field verification when required.

Job description

  • This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and power plant engineering
  • You will be preparing calculations, evaluations, and technical reports to support client recommendations and reviews, and will additionally conduct equipment sizing, optimization evaluation, and selection in response to project needs
  • While supporting project teams with other Mechanical Engineers, you will be involved in system engineering, including the design, modification, and analysis of power plant mechanical systems
  • There is the potential for you to travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for meetings and field verification of designs

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week.QualificationsWe do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.Essential Skills And Experience
  • This position requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, power engineering, turbomachinery, thermal systems, and energy conversion
  • 3 or more years of experience in the power industry
  • Assignments require the preparation of calculations and reports, and excellent technical report writing skills are essential
  • Knowledge of the practical application of mechanical engineering and technology including applying systems, principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to a project design
  • Strong interest in numerical computations and problem solving
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps you apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.
