Job summary

Garmin in Cary, NC is seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 to develop moderately complex mechanical solutions, test and validate, and move designs toward mass production within the Outdoor product category.

You will model parts in CAD, participate in design reviews, mockup and test basic systems, and estimate tooling and costs while collaborating with vendors and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 1 year relevant experience or equivalent
• Cumulative GPA 3.0+ as a guideline
• Proficient in CAD modeling of moderately complex parts
• Proficient with relevant engineering tools and software

Responsibilities

• Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
• Model complex parts as an expert CAD user
• Participate in design reviews and provide comments on designs
• Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify requirements
• Estimate tooling, part costs and design time for basic designs
• Communicate effectively with vendors of custom mechanical parts

Job description

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 at Garmin's location in Cary, NC. In this role, you will be responsible for developing moderately complex mechanical solutions, testing and validating, completing technology explorations and/or delivering to mass production within the Outdoor product category.

Essential Functions

• Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products


• Model complex parts as an expert CAD user


• Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs


• Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements


• Make estimates on tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs


• Communicate effectively with vendors that produce custom mechanical parts as required


• Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems


• Possess knowledge of injection modeling, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc.


• Demonstrate proficient knowledge of preferred part materials for basic part production and performance

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND 1 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience


• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)


• Demonstrates knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model moderately complex parts


• Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of relevant engineering tools

Desired Qualifications

• Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)


• Previous work experience in design, particularly for consumer products


• Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience


• Experience using SolidWorks CAD or OnShape


• A passion for the Outdoors
