About The Role
The Mechanical Engineer at ASI plays a critical role in the design and development of simulated training devices. This position involves working in a dynamic prototyping environment, requiring a highly motivated, self-driven, and hands-on individual who is also a team player. The ideal candidate will possess broad technical knowledge of mechanical design, including structural frames, sheet metal components, control loading mechanisms, and assemblies. The primary design tool used is SolidWorks, with occasional updates to existing designs documented in AutoCAD or other CAD software. The Mechanical Engineer collaborates with vendors, suppliers, and internal teams to create, present, and refine mechanical designs, ensuring they meet stringent functional, performance, and safety standards. Mentoring junior engineers and supporting manufacturing processes are also key aspects of this role. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to innovative projects supporting national defense and to work within a collaborative environment that values technical excellence and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will be integral to delivering reliable, manufacturable, and maintainable training systems that meet customer specifications and industry standards.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of education and experience, including a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience. Candidates with 3 to 7 years of relevant industry experience are preferred. Essential qualifications include proficiency with parametric modeling and analysis software, particularly SolidWorks, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, and sheet metal fabrication. Experience with detailed mechanical mechanisms, including bearings, gears, pulleys, motors, and fasteners, is required. Knowledge of design for manufacturing best practices, material selection, and quality control processes is essential. Familiarity with welding, machining, composites, 3D printing, and finite element analysis is a plus, especially within the simulator industry. Additional skills include excellent communication abilities, the capacity to manage multiple projects, and proficiency with business software such as Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance, and willing to travel domestically and internationally as needed. A strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are critical for success in this role.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with Systems and Electrical Engineering teams to gather comprehensive requirements for new training systems, ensuring alignment with government and industry standards and customer specifications.
  • Review, evaluate, research, and design mechanical components and systems to meet contractual specifications and functional requirements.
  • Create detailed, manufacturable mechanical designs, including structural frames, assemblies, and components, utilizing SolidWorks and AutoCAD as needed.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive drawings, models, and documentation to support manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers and drafters, providing guidance to develop cohesive and efficient designs.
  • Present mechanical concepts and designs during customer meetings, design reviews, and configuration audits to ensure clarity and alignment with project goals.
  • Support manufacturing by resolving design and documentation issues during production, and manage engineering change documentation to facilitate process improvements.
  • Coordinate with the CAD team to generate detailed drawings, installation instructions and modification documentation.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, including technical scope and cost estimates, to support new business opportunities.
  • Oversee the assembly, installation, and modification of designed components, ensuring quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Continuously review and improve existing designs for future enhancements and operational efficiency.
Benefits
ASI offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the well-being and professional growth of our employees. Our offerings include medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan with company match, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
