Job summary

Patz Corporation in Wisconsin is seeking an engineer to design and prototype production machinery. You will create 3D models, layouts and schematics from sketches, and prepare production prints with dimensions and BOMs.

You’ll collaborate with manufacturing on problem resolution and implement design changes to improve performance and reduce cost. The role requires strong CAD proficiency, math skills, and the ability to interpret complex instructions.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in the use of a CAD system required.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as plane and solid geometry, numerical analysis, calculus and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply engineering calculations in vector mechanics, kinematics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and control systems.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Using a CAD station, prepare 3D models, layouts or schematics from sketches, specifications, and other engineering reference data.
  • Prepare production prints from models and layouts, showing dimensions, tolerances, and bills of material.
  • Work on assembly and installation of prototypes at plant and on site to gain knowledge of machine uses.
  • Utilize sketches and data submitted to formulate and visualize original design concepts, calculate and check specifications.
  • Establish tolerances and dimensions to determine requirements for capacities and materials.
  • Provide technical information to Purchasing on procurement of materials and sources.
  • Approve purchases of materials needed for project completion.
  • Resolve technical problems under Engineer in charge.
  • Analyze design concepts for manufacturing feasibility and cost.
  • Recommend design changes to improve quality, performance and reduce cost.
  • Assist in resolving production problems with manufacturing.
  • Instruct and check drawings of the Mechanical Designer.
  • Provide technical assistance for construction and testing of pilot models.
  • Assist Project Engineer to analyze test results and propose design modifications.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Orders and Projects.
  • Alter drawings to fit Engineering Change Orders.
  • Draft manuals and assembly instructions for new products.
  • Assist Technical Illustrator Writer with proof copies to ensure accuracy.
  • Undertake more complex assignments as directed by supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Essential Job Duties:

  • Using a CAD station, prepare 3D models, layouts or schematics from sketches, specifications, and other engineering reference data.
  • Prepare production prints from models and layouts, showing dimensions, tolerances, and bills of material.
  • Work on assembly and installation of prototypes both at plant and on location such as farms, factories, etc. to gain firsthand knowledge of machine uses.
  • Utilize sketches and data submitted to formulate and visualize original design concepts, calculate and check specifications.
  • Establish acceptable tolerances and dimensions not specified to determine requirements as to capacities, operating requirements, material selection, type of construction, etc.
  • Provide technical information to the Purchasing Department on matters dealing with procurement of special materials, specifications, available sources, etc.
  • Assume responsibility for approving purchase of materials needed for project completion.
  • Work under the direction of Engineer in charge to resolve technical problems.
  • Analyze design concepts as to feasibility of manufacturing and cost.
  • Recommend and implement such technical and design changes as may be applicable to improvement of design, quality, operating performance, reliability and to reduce manufacturing cost, etc.
  • In conjunction with manufacturing, provide information and assist in resolving production problems in the area of manufacture.
  • Instruct, assist and check drawings of the Mechanical Designer assigned to you.
  • May provide technical assistance and information having to do with the construction and testing of pilot models.
  • Assist Project Engineer to analyze test results and recommend design modifications to remedy deviations and improve design.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Orders and Engineering Projects as needed.
  • Alter drawing to suit the Engineering Change Order or the Engineering Project.
  • Responsible for the rough draft production of manuals and assembly instruction of new products.
  • Assist the Technical Illustrator Writer in subsequent proof copies to ensure accuracy.
  • May at times be required to undertake more complex assignments as directed by supervisor.
OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in the use of a CAD system required.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from group of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, numerical analysis, calculus and trigonometry.
  • Ability to effectively apply engineering calculations within the subjects of vector mechanics (static and dynamic), kinematics, fluid dynamics, fluid power design, thermodynamics, material sciences, and control systems in the design of production machinery.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) preferred.
