Job description

Position Summary / Essential Function

Loos & Co. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support engineering initiatives across product design, manufacturing processes, and technical applications. This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving practical problems, working collaboratively across departments, and seeing their ideas translated into real products and improvements on the manufacturing floor.

Our engineering team supports a diverse range of products, equipment, and manufacturing processes. Depending on the selected candidate's experience, technical strengths, and interests, this position may focus more heavily on mechanical design and product development, manufacturing and process improvement, or technical applications and customer solutions.

The Mechanical Engineer works closely with Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, Sales, and other Engineering personnel to evaluate technical requirements, develop practical solutions, troubleshoot challenges, and improve product and process performance.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities according to the selected candidate's area of focus include:

DESIGN: Mechanical Design & Product Development

  • Design, develop, modify, and improve mechanical components, assemblies, products, tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing equipment.

  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, 3D models, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and related technical documentation.

  • Evaluate product designs for functionality, manufacturability, quality, performance, and cost.

  • Support prototyping, product testing, engineering changes, and new product introduction.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality to resolve product design challenges and implement improvements.

PROCESS: Manufacturing & Process Engineering

  • Evaluate and improve manufacturing processes, equipment, tooling, and production methods to increase efficiency, reliability, quality, and throughput.

  • Work directly with production personnel to troubleshoot technical challenges, identify root causes, and implement practical solutions.

  • Analyze production performance, including cycle times, scrap, downtime, yield, and process capability, to identify improvement opportunities.

  • Develop or improve tooling, fixtures, work instructions, process specifications, and manufacturing documentation.

  • Support equipment improvements, process development, production trials, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, and Quality to ensure engineering improvements are successfully implemented and sustained.

APPLICATIONS: Technical Applications & Engineering Support

  • Evaluate customer requirements, engineering specifications, drawings, and product applications to develop technically sound solutions.

  • Partner with Sales and other departments to assess product capabilities, feasibility, and custom engineering opportunities.

  • Support technical quotations, cost estimates, bills of materials, and manufacturing requirements for new or modified products.

  • Assist in selecting appropriate materials, components, products, and manufacturing methods based on application requirements.

  • Collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to resolve technical questions and support successful product implementation.

Cross-Functional Engineering & Continuous Improvement

  • Apply engineering principles and structured problem-solving to address product, process, equipment, and manufacturing challenges.

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, machinists, technicians, operators, supervisors, and other departments to develop practical solutions.

  • Participate in engineering projects from initial evaluation and planning through implementation and follow-up.

  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and support applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

  • Identify opportunities to improve product performance, manufacturing efficiency, technical processes, and overall operational effectiveness.

  • Perform other related engineering duties and projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent technical education and relevant experience may also be considered.

  • Experience in mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, process improvement, technical applications, or a related engineering function.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of engineering principles, materials, components, and manufacturing processes.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and manufacturing requirements.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical, cost-effective solutions.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work directly with manufacturing personnel and spend time in a production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is beneficial, but candidates are not expected to possess expertise in all of them:

  • Mechanical design, product development, or 2D/3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.

  • Manufacturing or process engineering in an industrial production environment.

  • Machining, metalworking, tooling, fixtures, or equipment-intensive manufacturing processes.

  • Technical applications engineering, product selection, customer specifications, or engineering support for Sales.

  • New product development, prototyping, testing, or product validation.

  • Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, root cause analysis, or process optimization.

  • Engineering drawings, GD&T, bills of materials, engineering changes, or manufacturing documentation.

  • ERP/MRP systems, engineering document management, or manufacturing data analysis.

  • Wire, cable, mechanical assemblies, metal products, or related industrial manufacturing.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Mechanical Engineer combines technical knowledge with curiosity, initiative, and practical problem-solving. They are comfortable investigating challenges, working directly with the people closest to the work, and developing solutions that balance performance, quality, manufacturability, and cost.

Whether their strengths lie in product design, manufacturing improvement, or technical applications, they contribute meaningful engineering expertise, communicate effectively across departments, and take ownership of their projects through successful implementation.

Physical / Work Environment
  • Work is performed in both office and manufacturing environments, with regular interaction on the production floor.

  • May require standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional handling of materials, components, or tooling.

  • Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions, including operating equipment, machinery, and shop noise.

  • Compliance with applicable safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.

  • Occasional travel to other company facilities, suppliers, or customer locations may be required.
