Mechanical Engineer II

Location: Onsite – Lincolnshire, IL

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Mechanical Engineer II to join our Sustaining Engineering team. This role focuses on maintaining and enhancing existing printer product lines, ensuring continuous product reliability, manufacturability, and compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment and contribute to sustaining projects that support high-quality electromechanical office equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Support Existing Products

  • Investigate and resolve mechanical issues in production and fielded products.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

Design Improvements

  • Recommend and implement design enhancements to improve reliability, manufacturability, and reduce costs.
  • Conduct tolerance stack-ups and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis.

Change Management

  • Prepare and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Maintain and update product documentation including drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and CAD models.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customer service teams to resolve technical challenges.
  • Participate in design reviews, failure investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Testing & Validation

  • Develop and execute test protocols for component and system validation.
  • Evaluate returned product failures and provide detailed reports with proposed solutions.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to resolve mechanical part issues and improve quality.
  • Review and approve supplier drawing changes and deviations.

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure product compliance with applicable industry standards, regulations, and internal requirements.
  • Support documentation and testing for agency certifications (e.g., UL, CE).
  • Assist in sustaining projects from initiation through release.
  • Manage small-to-medium sized projects or project components independently with moderate supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical design, manufacturing support, or sustaining engineering roles.
  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical systems or products involving moving parts.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
  • Experience creating and processing ECOs, BOMs, and design documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with familiarity in root cause analysis tools (5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with PLM systems (Windchill, Arena, Agile).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or designing printers, copiers, or similar electromechanical office equipment.
  • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing and injection-molded plastic parts.
  • Experience in developing and executing mechanical test plans and validation protocols.
  • Hands-on experience with lab testing, fixture design, or thermal and vibration testing.
  • Background in cost reduction, reliability improvement, or vendor quality projects.
  • Direct experience working with suppliers to resolve part issues and approve alternatives.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Kaizen methodologies.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance such as RoHS, REACH, and UL certifications.
