Job summary

HDR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in Kansas City to lead HVAC and plumbing design for commercial and institutional facilities. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, review code compliance, and manage document development from schematic design through contract documents.

A PE license and strong experience in HVAC systems are essential. We value an active employee-owned culture and a commitment to building mechanical excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Professional Engineer license recognized by the location's licensing board (PE/P.Eng).
  • Experience with HVAC and plumbing systems design in commercial/institutional facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the mechanical design team through schematic design and contract document phases.
  • Coordinate with agencies for code compliance and conduct reviews.
  • Lead site work sessions with Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Review documents for conflicts and write/edit mechanical specifications.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.

In the role of Mechanical Engineer, we’ll count on you to:

  • Coordinate the work of the mechanical design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Coordinate workload to complete the document on schedule
  • Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines
  • Review mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines
  • Write and edit mechanical specifications, selects equipment, mechanical systems and devices
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Mechanical Project Engineers, Mechanical Project Coordinators or Mechanical CAD Technicians as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5-10 years experience in HVAC and plumbing systems design
  • Revit MEP experience preferred
  • Computer experience utilizing MS Office, IESVE, Trane TRACE, or similar manufacturer selection software
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • Commercial/institutional experience in healthcare, technology/data centers, and/or water-wastewater preferred
  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with mechanical emphasis
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design, LEED, desired but not required
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

  • Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
