Mechanical Engineer – Automation Systems
Location: Metro Detroit (Onsite)
Reports to: Engineering Manager / Director of Engineering
Position Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with strong experience designing custom automation equipment and assembly systems. This role will focus heavily on mechanical design using SolidWorks and the design and integration of pneumatic systems for automated machinery and production lines.
The ideal candidate has worked in a Build-to-Order, project-driven environment, understands how designs translate to the shop floor, and is comfortable supporting equipment from concept through build, debug, and installation.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Design custom automation equipment and assembly systems using SolidWorks.
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Design and specify pneumatic systems including cylinders, valves, manifolds, air prep, tubing, and fittings.
- Select components and materials appropriate for industrial automation applications.
- Ensure designs meet performance, safety, and manufacturability requirements.
Automation & Assembly Systems
- Support the design of automated stations, fixtures, tooling, and assembly lines.
- Collaborate with Controls Engineers to ensure seamless mechanical and controls integration.
- Support layout development, station sequencing, and ergonomic considerations.
- Participate in design reviews and problem-solving sessions for complex automation projects.
Build-to-Order Project Support
- Work in a Build-to-Order / custom machinery environment with unique designs for each project.
- Support projects through the full lifecycle: concept, design, build, debug, FAT, and installation.
- Interface with Manufacturing, Assembly, and Machining teams to ensure designs are buildable and efficient.
- Support troubleshooting and design changes during build and debug phases.
Documentation & Standards
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation, BOMs, and revision control.
- Apply internal engineering standards and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement of design processes and templates.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 3–10+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial automation or custom machinery.
- Strong SolidWorks experience required (assemblies, drawings, configurations).
- Hands-on experience designing pneumatic systems for automation or assembly lines required.
- Experience working in a Build-to-Order, project-based manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with machining, fabrication, and assembly processes.
- Ability to work onsite and collaborate closely with shop-floor teams.
