Responsibilities

• Design custom automated machinery and mechanical systems.

• Develop equipment designs with consideration for functionality, manufacturability, and assembly.

• Produce and maintain detailed engineering drawings and bills of materials.

About the Role

An established automation business is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its engineering team.

This is a hands-on design position for an engineer who enjoys taking custom machinery from initial concept through detailed design, build, testing, and final installation. The role provides the opportunity to work closely with controls, manufacturing, and assembly teams while maintaining ownership of the mechanical design process.

Key Responsibilities

• Design custom automated machinery and mechanical systems
• Develop machine concepts, layouts, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings
• Design tooling, fixtures, guarding, and mechanical components
• Select motors, gearboxes, bearings, actuators, and other mechanical components
• Develop equipment designs with consideration for functionality, manufacturability, and assembly
• Collaborate closely with controls engineers, manufacturing teams, and machine builders throughout projects
• Produce and maintain detailed engineering drawings and bills of materials
• Support equipment during assembly, testing, and troubleshooting
• Resolve mechanical design issues identified during the machine-build process

Qualifications

• Mechanical design experience within custom automation, machinery, or manufacturing equipment
• Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor
• Experience taking machinery from initial concept through detailed design
• Strong understanding of mechanical components, mechanisms, and manufacturing processes
• Experience designing tooling, fixtures, assemblies, and machine components
• Ability to create detailed manufacturing drawings and bills of materials
• Experience selecting motors, gearboxes, bearings, actuators, and related components
• Strong mechanical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Comfortable working closely with manufacturing and assembly teams on the shop floor
• Ability to see designs through from initial development to completed equipment
