Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to evaluate, redesign, and improve manufacturing equipment within our food-production facility. Much of our existing equipment has been in service for an extended period, creating a need for an engineer who can identify mechanical limitations, develop practical design improvements, and help extend equipment life while improving reliability, safety, sanitation, and production performance.

This individual will create and revise mechanical designs, drawings, assemblies, and equipment layouts while working closely with plant maintenance and operations to solve real-world production problems. The ideal candidate can move comfortably between CAD design work and the production floor, understanding how equipment is operated, maintained, fabricated, installed, and cleaned.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Evaluate existing production and packaging equipment to identify mechanical weaknesses, recurring failures, capacity constraints, and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop mechanical designs and redesigns for aging machinery, components, assemblies, guards, frames, conveyors, brackets, change parts, and related equipment.
  • Create and revise detailed CAD drawings, models, assemblies, layouts, and fabrication documentation.
  • Reverse-engineer obsolete, damaged, or difficult-to-source machine components when original drawings are unavailable.
  • Measure existing equipment and translate field conditions into accurate drawings and mechanical specifications.
  • Improve equipment reliability, maintainability, safety, sanitation, throughput, and overall performance.
  • Work directly with maintenance technicians and production personnel to understand equipment problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Support equipment modifications from concept and design through fabrication, installation, testing, and production startup.
  • Coordinate with machine shops, fabricators, equipment manufacturers, contractors, and component suppliers.
  • Assist with the selection and specification of mechanical components, materials, bearings, drives, motors, gearboxes, guarding, and other machine elements.
  • Ensure equipment designs are appropriate for a food-manufacturing environment, including sanitary design, cleanability, material selection, and employee safety.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical equipment failures and conduct root-cause analysis on recurring issues.
  • Support continuous-improvement and capital-equipment projects involving production, packaging, material handling, and facility systems.
  • Develop and maintain equipment drawings, bills of materials, technical specifications, and project documentation.
  • Participate in equipment installation, commissioning, validation, and performance testing.
  • Help establish stronger engineering and documentation standards for existing and future production equipment.
Qualifications Needed:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of mechanical engineering experience within a manufacturing, industrial, machinery, or equipment environment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or redesigning production machinery, manufacturing equipment, or mechanical assemblies.
  • Proficiency with a 2D or 3D CAD platform such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, Creo, or a comparable system.
  • Ability to create accurate mechanical drawings, assemblies, layouts, and fabrication documentation.
  • Experience evaluating existing equipment and developing practical modifications or replacement components.
  • Working knowledge of machine design principles, material selection, tolerances, fits, fabrication methods, and mechanical power transmission.
  • Proven ability to manage equipment-improvement projects from initial problem identification through implementation and testing.
  • Willingness and ability to work hands-on in a manufacturing environment during equipment assessment, installation, and startup.
  • Ability to work 1st shift from 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Strongly Preferred
  • Experience supporting food, beverage, dairy, consumer packaged goods, or other regulated manufacturing operations.
  • Experience designing equipment or components for sanitary and washdown environments.
  • Familiarity with conveyors, pumps, fillers, mixers, depositors, packaging equipment, material-handling systems, or automated production machinery.
  • Experience reverse-engineering equipment or components without complete original drawings.
  • Knowledge of GMP, food safety, machine guarding, OSHA requirements, and hygienic equipment design.
  • Experience working with outside machine shops, fabrication vendors, contractors, and OEMs.
