Job summary

UNOPS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support potable water supply and irrigation projects in the Middle East region. You will help design, review and procure mechanical systems, including pumps, piping, HVAC, and water distribution components.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and related tools is essential. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least two years of relevant experience and a track record in project assessments, design reviews and contractor

Responsibilities

• Provide mechanical and plumbing engineering support for potable water supply and irrigation infrastructure, including pumps, pipework, and associated components.
• Contribute to the design, review, and procurement of mechanical installations and services, including HVAC, fire safety, and water systems.
• Assist in preparing and evaluating tender documents, performing engineering calculations, and reviewing contractor submittals.
• Support testing, commissioning, and handover of mechanical deliverables.
• Conduct project assessments, review design documentation for quality assurance, and ensure alignment with project requirements and international standards.
• Utilize AutoCAD and Revit for documentation and apply relevant design software.
• Manage and archive technical materials and coordinate engineering activities.

Organizational context

The UNOPS Middle East Region (MR) provides strategic leadership and support across Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. The Amman Multi-Country Office (MCO) delivers solutions in infrastructure, procurement, and project management to address development, peace, and humanitarian challenges. The Nexus Response Mechanism (NRM) programme in Syria, funded by the EU and managed by UNOPS, focuses on strengthening resilience and recovery through infrastructure rehabilitation, including water supply and irrigation systems.

Job purpose

The Mechanical Engineer applies fundamental engineering concepts to gather and analyze data, supporting specialists and managers in the design, review, and supervision of mechanical engineering aspects for infrastructure projects. This role involves interpreting procedures, making initial recommendations based on straightforward analysis, and preparing documentation. The position provides foundational technical expertise in mechanical engineering, contributing to the successful assessment, design, procurement, and implementation of critical water supply and irrigation infrastructure interventions within the NRM programme.

Experience in project assessment, design, and supervision for rehabilitation projects is also necessary. Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD and mechanical engineering design software (e.g., HAP) is essential. Experience with international organizations is an asset.
