Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs in Middletown, OH is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide maintenance engineering support and maximize plant equipment availability. You will analyze health of equipment, recommend strategies to reduce shutdowns, and serve as a technical resource for planning, scheduling and execution of mechanical maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Develop long- and short-range goals for modernization and growth of the facilities and the corresponding annual budget.
• Responsible for mechanical systems, drawing development, and equipment specifications.
• Project Supervision for mechanical system development, procurement, and installation.
• Participate in management of downturn projects with contractor resources and Union workforce.
• Provide engineering design and specifications for mechanical equipment and systems including rotating equipment, piping systems, vessels, conveyors, and other mechanical equipment.
• Flag and advise production on risks related to equipment reliability and availability; support maintenance decisions.
• Maintain unit availability perspective and an equipment reliability strategy with documentation and follow-up.
• Review data from preventive maintenance activities for effectiveness and adjust frequency as needed.
• Lead on predictive technologies such as NDE/NDT, oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasonics and motor circuit analysis.
• Analyze historical maintenance data to drive improvements in KPI metrics; perform Root Cause Analysis for events and failures.

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer at our Middletown, OH location. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing maintenance engineering support to ensure plant equipment availability is maximized. This position will be responsible for supporting the operation through analysis of health equipment and recommending strategies to increase the time between shutdowns. This role serves as a technical resource for planning, scheduling, and execution of mechanical maintenance. This position will be responsible for supporting plant reliability using knowledge of mechanical systems to troubleshoot and decrease lost opportunities.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• The candidate will participate in developing long and short-range goals for modernization and growth of the facilities and the development of the corresponding annual budget.
• Responsible for mechanical systems, drawing development, and equipment specifications.
• Project Supervision for mechanical system development, procurement, and installation.
• Participate in management of downturn projects which will include managing contractor resources as well as directing the Union hourly workforce.
• Provide engineering design and specifications for mechanical equipment and systems including but not limited to rotating equipment, piping systems, vessels, conveyors and other mechanical equipment.
• Serves to flag and advise the production team with regard to risks related to equipment reliability, process equipment availability, and mechanical integrity.
• Responsible for maintaining a unit availability perspective and an equipment reliability strategy; this includes documenting problematic equipment and providing input and context for operational and maintenance activities.
• Review data from preventative maintenance activities and operations, monitoring those activities for effectiveness and if applicable, frequency, and making changes as necessary
• Be the lead on specific predictive technologies such as NDE/NDT, oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasonics and motor circuit analysis.
• Analyze operational and maintenance equipment history to deliver improvements in critical maintenance related metrics and KPI’s.
• Perform Root Cause Analysis in support of operational events and equipment failure investigations to ensure that the root cause/causal factors have been identified, corrective actions prescribed and follow-up monitoring conducted as applicable to determine effectiveness.
• Provide mechanical technical guidance and assistance with troubleshooting to Shift Supervisors and Mechanical Craft people daily.
• Conduct studies and prepare reports on project cost projections and potential cost-saving projects.
• Act as a liaison with third party service providers for oil, vibration, and thermography.
• Write work orders and provide input to execution of work where required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must have a B.S. Degree In Mechanical Engineering
• Must have at least 3 years of related experience in heavy manufacturing industry. Co-op or related experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

• AutoCAD
• Working in a Steelmaking process
• Structural and hydraulic systems experience
• Water treatment, filtration, pumps and piping experience
• Overhead crane and lifting equipment experience
