Job summary

Actalent seeks a Designer/Drafter in Parma, OH for its New Product Development team. You will transform concepts into production-ready designs and collaborate with engineers to move products from idea through prototype and pilot phases into manufacturing.

You will produce accurate, well-organized documentation, with a strong emphasis on manufacturability and cost. This fully onsite NPD role supports cross-functional reviews and detailed design work for multi-month to multi-year projects.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience developing and creating new products, preferably in the electrical-mechanical product space.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD design, with hands-on experience using tools such as PTC Creo.
• Experience with sheet metal components and weldments.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, including switchgear, breakers, low to medium voltage components, contactors, and fuses.
• BOM structure and best practices.
• Ability to interpret engineering sketches and technical specifications and convert them into detailed models and drawings.
• Experience in new product development environments from concept through manufacturing release.

Responsibilities

• Translate product requirements into prototype and pilot designs.
• Utilize 3D CAD (PTC Creo) to develop digital models supporting faster development cycles.
• Create detailed 3D models and drawings based on concepts, sketches, or legacy designs with focus on manufacturability.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Lead Project Engineer and other team members to translate product requirements into prototype and pilot designs.
• Utilize 3D CAD software, such as PTC Creo, to develop digital models that support faster and more efficient development cycles.
• Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings based on concepts, sketches, or legacy designs, with a strong focus on manufacturability.
• Design sheet metal components using both 2D and 3D tools, ensuring appropriate tolerances and fit are achieved.
• Recommend efficient assembly and fabrication methods to optimize designs for cost, production feasibility, and quality.
• Support technical and design reviews by presenting or assisting in the presentation of design models and documentation, ensuring alignment with internal processes and standards.
• Prepare complete documentation packages for release to manufacturing, including drawings, bills of materials (BOM), and machine files.
• Incorporate electrical-mechanical product requirements such as weldments, electrical systems, switchgear, breakers, low to medium voltage components, contactors, and fuses into design work as needed.
• Interpret engineering sketches and technical specifications and convert them into clear, accurate models and drawings.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team throughout project lifecycles that typically range from six months to two years for highly customizable load bank products.

Skills & Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience developing and creating new products, preferably in the electrical-mechanical product space.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD design, with hands‑on experience using tools such as PTC Creo.
• Experience with mechanical design, including sheet metal components and weldments.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, including switchgear, breakers, low to medium voltage applications, contactors, and fuses.
• Solid knowledge of Bill of Materials (BOM) structure and best practices.
• Ability to accurately interpret engineering sketches and technical specifications and convert them into detailed models and drawings.
• Experience working within new product development environments and supporting products from concept through manufacturing release.

Nice to Have

• Experience using Creo/Windchill for design and product data management.
• Proficiency in both 2D and 3D modeling software tools.
• Experience in both electrical and mechanical aspects of product design.
• Familiarity with solid modeling tools such as SolidWorks.
• Experience working on highly customizable products, such as load banks.
• Comfort collaborating within an engineering team of 20 or more professionals on multi‑month to multi‑year projects.

Work Environment

You will work in a recently opened office located near the manufacturing facility, providing close access to production operations and floor-level insights. The role is primarily desk-based, with approximately 90% of your time spent working on CAD models, drawings, and documentation at a workstation, and about 10% spent on the manufacturing floor supporting reviews and collaborating with production teams. You will be part of a collaborative engineering group that includes a dozen or more engineers focused on new product development, customization, and continuous improvement in a growing organization with strong demand for its products.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Parma, OH.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.00 - $36.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
