Job summary

Tata Technologies Inc. in Auburn Hills, MI is seeking a Mechanical Development Engineer (Engine) to build and execute the engine mechanical development plan for a major vehicle program.

The role collaborates with dyno operators, calibrators, and engineers to achieve performance targets across speeds and loads. Responsibilities include leading engine builds, BOM management, instrumentation, and post-test analysis, with weekly Chief Engineer progress reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from ABET-accredited school or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of related field experience.
  • Understanding of automotive processes such as DFMEA and DVP&R.
  • Familiarity with automotive engine design, components and testing.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills.
  • Organized, action oriented, and capable of dealing with ambiguity.

Responsibilities

  • Support Mechanical Development Dyno Testing for one major engine program.
  • Manage BOM and release BOM into Stellantis BOM system; oversee full BOM receipt.
  • Lead or support engine builds in Engine Build Unit and METS.
  • Deliver engine assemblies to dyno cells for development testing.
  • Design development plans and schedules for test properties.
  • Instrument test engines with sensors and transducers to analyze performance.
  • Collaborate with calibrators and dyno operators to develop calibrations.
  • Manage all test schedules, including calibration development and thermal characterization.
  • Provide root cause analysis and corrective action for issues.
  • Review and publish test results; create incident reports to drive closure.
  • Report progress to Chief Engineer weekly; coordinate post-test analysis and teardown.
  • Ensure records are collected and stored; lead maintenance and improvement of test procedures.

Position Overview:

The Engine Mechanical Development Engineer is responsible for building and executing the engine mechanical development plan for a major vehicle program.

Responsibilities
  • Support all Mechanical Development Dyno Testing for one major engine program
  • Carry out Bill of Materials (BOM) management, releasing the BOM into Stellantis BOM management system.
  • Manage receipt of full bill of material for engine assemblies.
  • Lead / support actual engine build in EBU (Engine Build Unit) and preparation in METS (Mobile Engine Test Stand department).
  • Successfully build and deliver Engine Assemblies to dyno cells for mechanical development testing.
  • Design Mechanical Development plans and schedules for test properties.
  • Oversee instrumentation of test engines with pressure transducers, thermocouples, sensors and probes necessary to analyze engine operation and controls and calibration effectiveness.
  • Work closely with calibrators and dyno operators and engineers to develop robust steady state and transient calibrations to allow engines to meet performance targets at all speed and load conditions.
  • Manage all Mechanical development test schedules including but not limited to: Big Grid calibration development, Oil Consumption mapping, thermal characterization, performance optimization, etc.
  • Provide technical expertise in investigation of issues, root cause analysis, mitigation, and corrective action plans.
  • Review and publish test results to the greater team.
  • Create Incident Reports for each issue to ensure engineering team drives issues to closure.
  • Report out regularly to the Chief Engineer organization on the status and progress of testing. This reporting will continue weekly until the mechanical development is completed and signed off by the Chief Engineer.
  • After testing, organize the post test analysis and teardown activity along with the project team to identify any issues or concerns.
  • Review reports with the Chief Engineer and file them in PDS.
  • Provide instructions for disposition, re-use or recycling of the test properties
  • A final review must be completed when all mechanical development activity is complete to ensure all records are properly collected and stored.
  • Lead the maintenance, development, and improvement of test procedures
Basic Qualifications
  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, from an ABET accredited school or equivalent
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field
  • Understanding of automotive processes such as DFMEA and DVP&R
  • Familiarity with automotive engine design, components, and testing
  • Strong interpersonal communication, team/leadership skills/experience
  • Critical character traits to ensure success: Organized, Action Oriented, Dealing with Ambiguity, Customer Focus, Problem Solving.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in with emphasis in engine development, control systems, or calibration.
  • Understanding of CAN communication
  • Working experience in creation and execution of mechanical development plans for engine components.
  • 5 years or more in design, development and / or validation of engines
  • Previous experience with engine controls and calibration
  • Experience with engine teardowns and rebuilds
