Job description

Mechanical Designer - SolidWorks

Cephas Consultancy Services Private Limited Chilton, Wisconsin, United States

About this position
Job Id :CLI-45662-6
Job Type: Direct hire

Mechanical Designer / Product Development
Some design jobs are mostly about making drawings.
This is not one of them.
This role is about turning customer needs, production knowledge, and practical ideas into trailers that are easier to build, better to use, and stronger in the market.
When this role is done well, the impact is visible. Customers get better solutions. Production has fewer workarounds. Problems get fixed instead of repeated. Costs come down. New ideas move from rough concept to finished product without sitting on the owner’s desk waiting for someone to push them forward.
This is a role for someone who wants to be close to the work. You will work with customers, production, vendors, and leadership to understand the problem, develop practical options, make tradeoffs, and see designs through to the shop floor.
Chilton Trailers designs and manufactures trailers for customers who need practical, durable equipment that works in the real world. As we grow, design can no longer be just drafting support. It needs to become a stronger part of how we serve customers, improve production, reduce cost, and develop new opportunities.

What you will own
  • Creating and maintaining SolidWorks models, assemblies, drawings, and production documentation.
  • Turning customer needs, rough ideas, sketches, and shop feedback into practical trailer designs.
  • Developing design options when needed so the team can compare cost, strength, manufacturability, weight, appearance, and customer value.
  • Working with production to fix recurring problems, reduce rework, simplify builds, and improve how trailers are made.
  • Supporting custom and semi-custom trailer designs where there is repeat potential and a clear business case.
  • Helping evaluate design changes for strength, cost, weight, fabrication difficulty, lead time, and real customer use.
  • Working with vendors and fabricators when parts, processes, or outside work need to be quoted, changed, or improved.
  • Maintaining a clean SolidWorks library so future designs are faster, more consistent, and easier to manage.
  • Creating accurate drawings, bills of material, cut lists, and supporting information needed to build the product correctly.
  • Following designs through production, not just handing off drawings and walking away.
  • Looking for practical ways to reduce cost, improve quality, and make the product easier to build.
Who will do well here

You will do well here if you are mechanically minded, practical, curious, and willing to take ownership.
You should be comfortable working in the real world of manufacturing, where designs have to survive customers, welders, suppliers, costs, schedules, and imperfect information.
You do not need to be a pure engineer. You do need to understand how forces move through a structure, how materials behave, how fabrication works, and how small design decisions affect cost, build time, and product performance.
You should enjoy solving problems, not just documenting them. You should be willing to walk into the shop, ask questions, listen to feedback, and improve the design based on what is actually happening.
This role requires follow-through. We are not looking for someone who waits to be pushed every step of the way. We are looking for someone who can take a concept, develop the design, work through the details, support the build, and help get it across the finish line.

What you bring
  • Strong SolidWorks experience (will consider other 3D CAD experience)
  • Prefer a minimum of 5 years of 3D CAD experience)
  • Must be comfortable working with, and presenting to customers
  • Understanding of fabricated steel parts, welding, sheet metal, tubing, brackets, fasteners, axles, suspensions, and basic manufacturing methods.
  • Ability to create accurate models, assemblies, drawings, and production documentation.
  • Practical understanding of forces, load paths, material selection, and how designs fail in real use.
  • Ability to balance strength, cost, weight, ease of manufacturing, and customer value.
  • Willingness to work directly with production to solve problems and improve designs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with customers, vendors, production employees, and leadership.
  • Enough project management ability to move work forward without needing constant follow-up.
  • Internal drive, resilience, and a strong sense of ownership.
  • Bonus Points for mechanical design experience in trailers, equipment, fabrication, vehicles, agricultural equipment, attachments, metal products, or a similar field.
  • A two-year degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, CAD design, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
Why Us

Here, your work will matter every day.
This is a chance to help shape the next stage of a growing manufacturing company. The right person will not just make drawings. They will help improve products, support customers, reduce production headaches, and create design capacity that allows the business to grow.
For the right person, this is a rare opportunity. You can be close to the customer, close to the shop floor, close to the owner, and close to the decisions that shape the product. You will be able to see your work turn into real equipment that customers use.
If you like practical design, manufacturing, customer-focused problem solving, want more independence and ownership, and the satisfaction of seeing your ideas become finished products, this could be a very strong fit.
