Job description

Spectra Tech is seeking a Mechanical Designer in Oak Ridge, TN.

Overview

The Fusion Energy Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks applications for a Mechanical Designer and Technician. The selected candidate will focus on the modeling, design and detailing of components and assemblies. The candidate will assist in the assembly and maintenance of cryogenic systems for R&D activities and for major international fusion experimental facilities. This work is conducted in support of ongoing scientific research and technology development for the U.S. Department of Energy fusion energy programs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • The successful candidate will work on the design, development and improvement of fusion technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Significant experience with one or more CAD programs such as Creo (formerly Pro/Engineer), SolidWorks or Catia is required.
  • Collaboration with senior designers, engineers, and physicists in the creation of 3D components and assemblies will be a regular function of the position.
  • The candidate will create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication, communicate with engineering and design staff through the fabrication and assembly process.
  • A strong understanding of the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and American Welding Society (AWS) notation in engineering drawings is required.
  • The candidate will not only support mechanical design, but will also be expected to participate in the mechanical assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of these systems.
  • The position will support senior technical staff in a variety of projects involving vacuum, cryogenics, high pressure, and electromagnetic fields.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications

  • Significant experience in Creo (Pro/Engineer) and an associated PDM (Windchill) is required.
  • Experience with the application of GD&T and weld notation on a 2D drawing is required.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes and design for manufacturability is required.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently or in a team.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal are expected.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Highly skilled in Creo (Pro/Engineer) and the application of GD&T and weld notation on 2D drawings.
  • Experience in the design of components related to vacuum or cryogenic systems is preferred.
  • Experience in hands-on troubleshooting, assembly, and disassembly of mechanical systems.
