Job summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) in Rancho Bernardo, CA, is seeking a Mechanical Designer to update CAD drawings and models using Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and NX. You will develop production drawings and assemblies for sustainment with close attention to accuracy and fit.

Responsibilities include creating clear drawings, verifying details, performing tolerance analyses, and integrating ECN redlines in Windchill.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or certificate with training in engineering software.
  • Strong knowledge of dimensioning and tolerances and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with 3D CAD solid modeling and multiple CAD tools.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering layouts and detailed drawings from engineering input, reflecting compatibility with other systems.
  • Create readable drawings suitable for fabrication or use by others.
  • Verify dimensions, materials, quantities, and perform basic calculations.
  • Perform tolerance stack‑up and interface compatibility analyses.
  • Revise CAD drawings per ECN redlines in Windchill workflow.
  • Maintain records, drawings, parts lists, specifications and related data.
  • Observe laws and safety procedures during all work.

Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first‑of‑a‑kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA‑EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We have an exciting opportunity for a detail‑oriented Mechanical Designer to revise CAD drawings and models supporting our sustainment group in Rancho Bernardo, CA. Under general supervision, using computer‑aided design (CAD), Creo, Solidworks, AutoCAD and possibly NX, prepares complex engineering layouts, and/or detail drawings of minor components or portions of major systems. Work reflects individual creative use of known manufacturing and engineering principles and practices. Works from various forms of engineering input; makes mathematical calculations as required; determines proper layout of and prepares complete production detail drawings, assemblies, and installations; contributes design modifications to improve quality of product or facilitate manufacturing operations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Using standard and advanced CAD techniques and skills, works from engineering input including verbal or written instructions, sketches, or other specifications, prepares engineering layouts and/or detailed drawings of subsystems or subassemblies which reflect compatibility with other mating systems or equipment.
  • Creates readable drawings suitable for fabrication or for use by others in making finished drawings.
  • Verifies own work, checking dimensions, materials used, quantities, performing mathematical calculations supported by handbooks and catalogs.
  • Performs basic engineering calculations such as tolerance stack‑up, interface compatibility, ease of assembly, and applicable system parameters using pertinent reference material.
  • Revises CAD drawings per Engineering ECN redlines assigned through the Windchill workflow.
  • Maintains records, files, drawing and parts lists, specifications, standards and other data essential to the completion of engineering drawings as required.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
Additional Functions
  • May provide technical direction to drafting personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a high school diploma or a certificate from a recognized organization certifying completion of a training program utilizing technical engineering software applications and five or more years of experience in all aspects of drafting techniques and skills using 3D CAD solid modeling. May substitute additional education in lieu of work experience.
  • Must have good knowledge of dimensioning and tolerances, manufacturing processes and equipment, and other industry practices and standards.
  • Must be proficient in algebra, trigonometry, solid and analytic geometry, and properties of materials.
  • Must have good organizational skills and judgement in planning and performing tasks along with good communication and interpersonal skills required for interfacing and presenting results.
  • Must have good knowledge of computer operations and software relevant to design and drafting tasks. The ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self‑initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance may be required.
