Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional mechanical design or drafting experience.
  • Experience creating layouts for industrial equipment, automation, conveyors or similar.
  • Advanced AutoCAD proficiency and 3D CAD experience (Inventor/SolidWorks).

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop and revise 2D and 3D mechanical layouts for conveyor and automated material handling systems.
  • Create plan views, elevations, sections, equipment details, and installation drawings.
  • Translate project requirements, equipment specs, vendor drawings, and field information into layouts.
  • Integrate conveyor systems and vendor equipment into customer facility layouts.
  • Review drawings for dimensional conflicts, clearance issues, and installation constraints.
  • Coordinate drawing information with Project Engineering, Controls, Electrical, Installation, vendors and other teams.
  • Revise drawings based on changes, customer requirements, redlines and field conditions.
  • Prepare installation and as-built drawings and maintain drawing revisions.

Mechanical Designer II

Department: Project Engineering
Location: West County, MO
100% Onsite 63043
Position Type: Full-Time / Direct Hire - paid hourly some possible travel to client sites.
Salary:
$70,000 $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Exceptional, highly experienced candidates may be considered above this range.

The Mechanical Designer will work closely with Project Engineers, Project Managers, vendors, and installation teams to develop accurate, practical, and installation-ready layouts and project drawings.

The ideal candidate will have direct experience with complex automated systems that combine robotics, conveyance, sensing scanning,custom control software to move and process high volumes of product accurately and quickly for large-scale operations, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently develop and revise 2D and 3D mechanical layouts for conveyor and automated material handling systems.
  • Create plan views, elevations, sections, equipment details, and installation drawings.
  • Translate project requirements, equipment specifications, vendor drawings, sketches, redlines, and field information into accurate layouts.
  • Integrate conveyor systems and vendor-supplied equipment into customer facility layouts.
  • Review equipment specifications and vendor drawings and incorporate accurate dimensions and requirements.
  • Identify dimensional conflicts, equipment interferences, clearance issues, access limitations, and installation constraints before drawings are released.
  • Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and facility drawings and accurately position equipment.
  • Coordinate drawing information with Project Engineering, Controls, Electrical, Installation, vendors, and other project teams.
  • Revise drawings based on project changes, customer requirements, redlines, and field conditions.
  • Prepare installation and as-built drawings.
  • Maintain accurate drawing revisions and organized project documentation.
  • Participate in drawing reviews and communicate potential issues or missing information to project personnel.
  • Support field measurements and help resolve drawing-related installation issues when needed.
  • Manage multiple projects, drafting assignments, and changing priorities with limited day-to-day supervision.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional mechanical design or drafting or equipment-layout experience.
  • Proven experience creating mechanical layouts for industrial equipment, machinery, automation, conveyors, material handling systems, or similar equipment-intensive applications.
  • Advanced AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar.
  • Ability to independently develop layouts from engineering requirements, specifications, vendor drawings, sketches, redlines, and field information.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and equipment drawings.
  • Strong understanding of dimensions, elevations, sections, clearances, equipment interfaces, and installation requirements.
  • Ability to recognize dimensional conflicts, equipment interference, access limitations, and installation concerns.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and spatial visualization skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities.
  • Comfortable working independently with limited supervision.
Strongly Preferred
  • Direct Automated material handling or warehouse automation experience.
  • Systems integration experience.
  • Experience laying out conveyors, sortation, scanning, labeling, guarding, platforms, supports, and related equipment.
  • Experience integrating vendor equipment into complete system layouts.
  • Experience taking or incorporating field measurements.
  • Experience preparing installation and as-built drawings.
  • Familiarity with equipment fabrication and field installation practices.
What Success Looks Like

Within a short period, the Mechanical Designer II will be expected to:

  • Take ownership of assigned drafting responsibilities.
  • Develop and revise equipment layouts with limited supervision.
  • Quickly understand and incorporate vendor equipment information.
  • Identify common equipment, dimensional, clearance, and installation conflicts.
  • Produce accurate drawings that Project Engineers and Project Managers can confidently use for project execution.
  • Effectively manage drawing revisions and priorities across multiple active projects.
  • Communicate clearly with project teams when additional information or clarification is required.
