Job summary

Cushing Terrell is seeking a Mechanical Designer to advance HVAC and plumbing design using 3D Revit modeling and coordinated ductwork and piping systems. You will manage small to mid-sized projects from concept through final design with minimal supervision from a senior engineer.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of job-related experience
  • Proficient with Autodesk MEP Revit, Auto CADD, Bluebeam, MS Office, and Outlook
  • Ability to design plumbing systems for small to mid-sized projects under minimal guidance
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems including VAV, VRF, and package rooftop units
  • Experience with hydronic piping sizing, pump and duct sizing, and fan selection
  • Familiarity with hydronic heating and chilled water systems
  • Knowledge of digital temperature control systems
  • Proficient with heating/cooling load analysis (e.g., Trane Trace)
  • Strong understanding of plumbing systems and codes and excellent QA
  • Client communication and collaboration within a team
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to correct design issues

Responsibilities

  • Consult with clients to determine functional requirements and prepare design information
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to develop preliminary concepts and drawings
  • Review shop drawings for mechanical equipment during construction administration
  • Perform research for complete system design
  • Conduct site surveys for existing HVAC/plumbing systems
  • Prepare field reports to verify installations meet design documents
  • Integrate engineering elements for client review and approval
  • Prepare scale drawings and contract documents for contractors
  • Complete cost estimates and select equipment
  • Provide code compliance research
  • Conduct engineering studies and prepare reports

Mechanical Designer

Position Description

As a Mechanical Designer, you will gain comprehensive exposure to HVAC and plumbing system design, including performing engineering calculations, developing technical specifications, and applying building codes with an advanced understanding of compliance requirements. This role involves continued development of three-dimensional Revit system modeling and the production of coordinated ductwork and piping designs. You will be entrusted with managing small to mid-sized projects from initial concept through final design, operating with minimal oversight from a senior engineer.

Position Salary Range*

The expected salary range for this position is $70,000 to $85,000 annually.

Required Qualifications**
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher education in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of job-related experience
  • Intermediate knowledge of Autodesk MEP Revit, Auto CADD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and Outlook
  • Ability to design plumbing system for a small to medium size project under minimal guidance from professional engineer from start to finish
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, such as VAV systems, VRF systems, and Package rooftop systems
  • Working knowledge of hydronic pipe sizing, pump selection, duct sizing and fan selection
  • Working knowledge of hydronic heating system design and chilled water-cooling system design
  • Working knowledge of digital temperature control systems
  • Proficient using a heating and cooling load software such as Trane Trace
  • Excellent working knowledge of plumbing systems, such as domestic hot & cold-water systems, natural gas, and waste and vent systems
  • Working knowledge of pipe sizing and layout of plumbing systems
  • Ability to collaborate and efficiently work on a team to produce high quality construction documents for projects
  • Basic knowledge of Plumbing and Mechanical Building Codes
  • High level of Quality control and ability to correct design issues

Position Responsibilities***
  • Consult with the client to determine functional requirements of new or renovated systems and/or projects and prepares information regarding design, specifications, estimated costs, and construction time
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to produce preliminary concepts and drawings such as developing electrical coordination lists for mechanical equipment
  • Review shop drawings for mechanical equipment during the construction administration process
  • Perform necessary research for design of complete systems
  • Conduct site surveys for as-building existing HVAC and plumbing systems for input into drawings
  • Conduct site inspections and prepares field reports for verification that installations meet design document requirements
  • Integrate engineering elements into design for client review and approval
  • Prepare scale drawings and contract documents for contractors
  • Complete cost estimates
  • Select equipment and prepare specifications
  • Provide basic research to codes and/or jurisdictional requirements
  • Perform engineering studies and prepare reports
  • Complete all necessary engineering functions to produce quality construction documents
  • Site travel and team meetings

  • Actual pay will be determined based on the candidate's years of experience, licensure status, location, level of proficiency, and other job-related factors (as permitted by law). This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus.
