Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer - Switchgear & Switchboards for a direct hire opportunity in Plano, TX. This position is responsible for designing custom low-voltage switchboards and switchgear, developing 3D models and engineering drawings, creating bills of materials (BOMs), and supporting manufacturing throughout the production process.

The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with SolidWorks, a strong manufacturing background, and knowledge of low‑voltage switchboard (UL 891) and switchgear (UL 1558) design, installation, and application.

This role works closely with electrical and mechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality, testing, and field service teams to develop practical, manufacturable solutions. The engineer will apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to reduce complexity, improve production efficiency, minimize custom fabrication, and control manufacturing costs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design custom low-voltage switchboards, switchgear, mechanical components, parts, and assemblies.
  • Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal components, and weldments using SolidWorks.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing principles to improve manufacturability, reduce system complexity, and shorten production lead times.
  • Design modular components and assemblies to reduce manufacturing costs and custom fabrication requirements.
  • Analyze project proposals, specifications, and customer requirements to develop appropriate power distribution solutions.
  • Generate and maintain accurate bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Modify standard assemblies to meet project-specific requirements.
  • Interpret customer bid packages, electrical one-line diagrams, front elevations, layouts, schematics, and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to develop integrated design solutions.
  • Partner with manufacturing and production teams to resolve design and fabrication issues.
  • Identify and evaluate alternative components based on design, availability, cost, and project requirements.
  • Support manufacturing, testing, quality, and field service teams to ensure designs are properly implemented.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, electrical codes, manufacturing requirements, and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot engineering and production issues and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Perform additional engineering responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience working within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong experience using SolidWorks modeling software, including 3D modeling, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal, and weldments.
  • Experience designing and modeling mechanical parts and assemblies from conceptual information.
  • Experience interpreting electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, front elevations, and related engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of low‑voltage switchboard design (UL 891) and switchgear design (UL 1558), installation, and application.
  • Working knowledge of UL 891, UL 508A, IEEE/ANSI, NEC, and NFPA 70E standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal codes governing the installation and use of low-voltage switchgear.
  • Strong mechanical design, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, production, quality, and field personnel.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 7+ years of mechanical engineering or related design experience.
  • Previous experience designing electrical power distribution equipment, switchboards, or switchgear.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, fabrication, testing, and production operations.
  • Experience applying Design for Manufacturing principles in an industrial environment.
  • Experience developing modular designs to improve production efficiency and reduce fabrication costs.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to work within office and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to move throughout production and shop environments as required.

This position may work across engineering offices, manufacturing facilities, production shops, testing areas, and commercial environments. The role requires regular collaboration with engineering and manufacturing personnel and may involve time spent on the production floor supporting design implementation and troubleshooting.
