Job summary

Integrated Power Services in Denver is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with transformer expertise to join our Service Center. You will perform analyses for rewind and reconditioning, develop engineered solutions, and provide technical support for in‑shop and field repairs, with emphasis on transformer construction and functionality.

The role requires experience with load tap changers, tank/core construction, and both power and special transformers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualification: B.S. or M.S. Mechanical Engineering Degree.
  • Preferred qualification: 5+ years' experience with transformer design and manufacture and/or rewind, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification desired.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to provide technical support to customers, repair shops, and field service activities.
  • Reverse engineer transformer tanks, cores, radiators, etc. and support drafting for coil designs.
  • Ensure that repairs meet customer expectations and applicable industry standards.
  • Review customer specifications and summarize material, engineering, and drafting costs for new proposals and change orders.
  • Create technical content for proposals and change orders.
  • Draft technical clarifications, exceptions, and submittals for vendors and customers.
  • Support the design of transformer rewinds, uprates, and upgrades across various designs, types, and OEMs during both quotation and execution phases.
  • Participate in design reviews as needed to identify and mitigate project risk.
  • Conduct engineering analyses and reverse‑engineering work.
  • Partner with the team to drive development and revision of mechanical transformer repair instructions.
  • Prepare and review project status updates and final repair or project reports.
  • Draft failure reports, repair instructions, and customer recommendations.
  • Provide technical support including customer site visits, vendor audits, and leading lunch‑and‑learns.

Responsibilities & Expectations

Integrated Power Services (IPS) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with expertise in transformers to join our Denver Service Center to provide support to our U.S. Transformer Center of Excellence. As a Mechanical Engineer for IPS, you will be responsible for performing various analyses on transformers for rewind and reconditioning; R&D to develop novel engineered solutions; and for providing technical support for our customers on their in-shop & field repairs. This position requires strong aptitude for transformer construction, design, and functionality.

The ideal candidate brings significant experience in transformer mechanical engineering, load tap changers, tank and core construction, and reverse engineering. Additionally, the ideal candidate would possess significant experience in both power transformers and special transformers.

Engineering & Project Support
  • Collaborate with the team to provide technical support to customers, repair shops, and field service activities.
  • Reverse engineer transformer tanks, cores, radiators, etc. and support drafting for coil designs.

Process Improvement, Quality & Business Alignment
  • Assist in the development of standard policies, procedures, and programs for the IPS Transformer Services business.
  • Develop and implement transformer repair practices and training curriculum.
  • Partner with the team to implement safety, quality, and productivity improvement actions.
  • Utilize Continuous Improvement Process Solution (CIPS) tools and processes.
  • Drive material cost reduction, supplier excellence, CIPS continuous improvement objectives, and related on‑site and service center support.
  • Ensure products meet customer, third‑party, and internal specifications, expectations, and standards.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Customer Engagement
  • Act as a technical advisor to customers.
  • Partner with operations, quality, purchasing, and sales to ensure company objectives are met improving safety, quality, productivity, and repair execution.
  • Engage with clients to support major proposals, RFP/RFQ responses, and technical presentations.
  • Help translate technical findings into clear customer‑facing recommendations and ensure IPS solutions are properly aligned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies
Education & Professional Credentials
  • Minimum qualification: B.S. or M.S. Mechanical Engineering Degree.
  • Preferred qualification: 5+ years' experience with transformer design and manufacture and/or rewind, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification desired.
Technical Expertise
  • Ability to analyze transformer factory test reports and provide a critique is preferred.
  • Ability to perform various calculations involving transformer turns, iron/copper‑loss, energization inrush current, and similar transformer components is preferred.
  • Strong hands‑on experience in fabrication, machining, manufacturing, machine repair, or similar.
  • Experience with the design, manufacturing, application, repair, testing, maintenance, IIOT, and diagnostics of transformers.
  • Ability to perform root‑cause failure analysis (RCFA) and develop technical solutions to OEM and Aftermarket design‑related problems.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to develop component part drawings in AutoCAD, Solid Works, or similar.
Project Management & Communication
  • Passion for critical thinking and creatively solving problems.
  • Provide technical phone support for service centers and field service personnel.
  • Write failure reports with critical technical analysis.
  • Provide technical support to the sales team and participate in customer visits, customer training, and sales training.

Travel Requirements
