On Line Design is assisting our client for a full time direct hire opportunity. We are looking for a motivated full-time Molten Salt System Mechanical Design Engineer, in Kettering, OH, with experience leading the mechanical design and deployment of molten salt systems, integrating vessels, piping, instrumentation, heating, and structure. In this role, you will develop manufacturing systems using our patented processes for creating battery cathodes and anodes. Our disruptive process addresses the limited supply and rising costs of battery materials faced with traditional cathode casting and anode manufacturing process.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, engineer, design and assist in the manufacture of high-volume manufacturing cathode and anode equipment and introduction of new products using the electroplating process
- Experience in full cycle design and construction of pilot or industrial scale molten salt mechanical systems and components
- Help design, lead, and coordinate the design including vessels and piping, instrumentation/sensor interfaces, fluid-mechanical equipment and components, and system structures
- Develops detailed CAD models, mechanical drawings, and P&IDs to support design reviews, presentations, analysis, and fabrication
- Designs or guides the design and selection of system components like pumps, valves, heaters, filters, and instruments with internal teams and outside vendors
- Collaborates closely with cross-disciplinary teams, including manufacturing, process design, instrumentation & controls, and engineering testing
- Oversees and coordinates component and system fabrication, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operation
- Design mechanical systems and assemblies from concept to production using 3D CAD software
- Develop documentation to support the design and development process, such as design specifications, design decision documents, engineering testing/analysis documents and reports, and well as verification procedures
- Contribute to R&D efforts to facilitate ongoing product development
- Produce detailed component and assembly drawings to be used in manufacturing and assembly
- Select major system components that satisfy design specifications while understanding tradeoffs and the overall impact to cost, availability, obsolescence, reliability, etc.
- Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs in accordance with company guidelines
- Maintain product quality through compliance with the companies ISO 9001 certification
- Troubleshoot and lead root cause investigations and corrective actions in process related defects.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 - 10 years of industry experience
- Strong background in mechanical design of molten salt systems
- Direct experience with advanced part and assembly modeling techniques using 3D CAD software like SolidWorks
- Strong experience with creating manufacturing and assembly drawings
- Experience designing electro-mechanical devices and systems
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
- Understands safe design stresses in both static and cyclically loaded components
- Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) related to structural loading
Desired Skills:
- Experience building process flow diagrams and process & instrumentation diagrams, as well as building mass-energy balances for processing plants. Working knowledge and experience with process simulation software is a plus
- Strong and independent problem-solving skills. Experience with diagnosing issues using failure analysis techniques and recommending solutions
- High temperature thermal processing/calcining systems
- Understanding of the flow behavior and characteristics of molten salts as they relate to reliable handling system design
